  • Somebody wants to give me a Hammond x5 & leslie. Any advice?

    Dear all/organ fans,

So this friday I'm going to pick up a (portable) Hammond x5 for our church! Does anyone know what model leslie is depicted on the image? (Is it a leslie 770?)

Does anyone have experience with this model? What do I have to be aware of? This will be the church's first organ, so I'm a newbie actually. I couldn't get any information about the weight of this model... Does anyone know how much the x5 weighs?

Also, any advice on transporting this organ is welcome!

Thank you all for reading & responding!

    Looks like a good combo.
X5's may suffer LSI disease - check every note on every drawbar.
    Leslie may require oiling.
Even if the X5 is toast, DO NOT trash that Leslie - it can be mated with any number of good quality Hammonds, old and new.
The X5 will have a Leslie preamp in the floor pedal casing - DO NOT discard it! If you trash the X5, KEEP the Leslie preamp as it is an absolute necessity to drive that Leslie
    Current:
1971 T-202 with Carsten Meyer mods: Remove key click filters, single-trigger percussion, UM 16' drawbar volume correction. Lower Manual bass foldback.
Korg CX3 (original 1980's analogue model).
1967 Leslie 122 with custom inbuilt preamp on back panel for 1/4" line-level inputs, bass & treble controls. Horn diffusers intact.
2009 Marshall 2061x HW Plexi head into Marshall 4x12 cabinet.

    Former:
    1964 C3
    196x M-102
    197x X5
    197x Leslie 825

Transporting an X5 is very easy. Lay it down on its back and remove the stand. Fold the stand together. There's a reverb lock under a locker that should be used, if I remember right. Then you can carry the organ like a suitcase, let be a rather big one.

You can do everything on yourself. To get the organ in a car requires help from one more, though.

Many years ago I used to transport an X5 and a 760 in a small dutch Daf 66 car. That was a tight fit, but it worked!

That really can't be determined by looking at the cabinet styles only.
There should be a data plate on the back of the Leslie which will state the Model Number, Serial Number,
          correct voltage, etc.

Should be a 770 Leslie if it has a 9-Pin connector.
            Have: Hammond 340212 Elegante
Had: Hammond T-311 and 333114 Colonnade
            Never will have: Laurens Hammond 350 w/ 2 - 751 Leslies

The X5 isn't actually an LSI Hammond, it's a Japanese Ace Tone (GT-5) wearing a Hammond badge and is probably better built than the first generation LSI Hammonds. But it does have ICs that are scarce or unobtainable. So do all the checks.
