  • RT-3 8000 Kit Not Working

    Hey guys,

A little help here? I have a 8000 hookup kit for my Leslie 21H and I wired it perfectly according to the instructions.

However, it does not switch the speeds from fast to off and back. The Leslie sounds good but always spins on fast, as if I had no kit installed at all.

Any tips on troubleshooting? I checked all the connections five or six times, reread the instructions four or five times, still nothing. I have the 6x5 adapter brand new from BB Organs.

    Thanks!

Does the Leslie work when connected to another (properly kitted) organ?
    Current organs: AV, M-3, A-100
    Current Leslies: 22H, 122, 770

      Hello,

If the internal speed relay is never excitated the speed is fast = Normal = B+ is missing somewhere.

5 pins cable requires internal wiring of B+ in the organ.

      Have you done ?

Check the large capacitor in the 8000 kit. If it doesn’t hold charge it won’t switch speed.

The relay might be stuck (contacts welded together).

Finally got the chance to poke around inside my cabinet... here’s what I found:

The B+ adapter was somehow shorting out. The socket is crispy, the adapter is fried (new one coming soon), although I don’t believe the tube is damaged. I took out the adapter, replaced the tube, and still no sound.

Anybody have any idea what might have happened here? How does this socket short out after operating perfectly for 50 years? What did I do?

My suspicion is that there's a short in the 8000 kit, which could have caused damage to one of the power supply resistors in the preamp. I don't know where the adapter picks off the voltage, so I cannot advise with more specificity. It may also be wise to replace the tube socket, unless it cleans up exceptionally well.

Those socket adapters contain a 33k resistor which is designed to load down the B+ voltage of the preamp (nearly 400V) to something more manageable. That resistor is most likely cooked, and opened up at this point. As for why it cooked, we can't say.

Every capacitor and resistor inside your 8000 kit needs to be tested and verified before you get another socket adapter. While you're at it, check the power supply voltages of your Preamp without the tube socket adapter installed. Clean up that tube socket before reinstalling the 6X4. If the socket is visibly brittle, time to replace it.

I'm not 100% certain this is correct, but I am fairly confident that you can test that socket adapter with an ohmmeter by measuring between socket adapter pin 7 and the brown wire coming off of it. If it's significantly higher than 33k or infinite, you know the socket adapter internal resistor is cooked. To my knowledge they are not replaceable and you will need a new adapter, but check everything else out first.
