  • L102 problems

Enor and bobmann.I've got a issue I need to ask you guys I have a 1962 or 65 l102.I'm pretty sure of the year..but I Dont know if its just me or the way it was built back then but..the percussion is not loud enough very low u have to run all drawbars halfway in to Git good sound from the percussion...can't seem to iron it out.I've went over just about everything..tubes.switches pots.?its not the preamp and prob not the amp cause I've went over just about all of it and can't seem to iron it out..the verbroto.works fine..the only other thing I found is that the lower keyboard when u are in ensombol.tab sorry can't spell it lol..but its low to....is this normal for this older l series???

    - - - Updated - - -

And 1 other thing is that when u play it other than my l112..the l102 has less highs in the sound all the drawbars work fine...can't figure it out..

    Ang, good news for you!

Kris and Kon have generously shared their ingenuity, with modifications I have successfully applied to an L102 and an L111a

    Kris’s L 100 series mods are at
    http://www.gietek.me.uk/index.html

    Kris’s L 100 percussion mods are at
    http://www.gietek.me.uk/html/percussion.html

Kris also has links to Kon Zissiz’s L 100 series mods at
    http://www.gietek.me.uk/html/kz_mods.html

There is nothing wrong with adjusting drawbars halfway. If you notice video footage of classic hammond players, the drawbars they choose, are not necessarily full out to “8.” This can result in a very crispy, crunchy percussion/drawbar balance, allowing greater harmonic versatility.

The later L 100 series amps should have a small flat head screw driver “gain adjustment.”
    1. adjust the organ amp gain adjustment,
    2. have plenty of headroom on the amplification you are running the L 100 through
    3. experiment with more prudent upper drawbar adjustments to mix differently with the percussion.

I think you will be pleased with what you come up with.

I was very happy with Kon’s vibrato modification for the L 100 series. I have basic skills & by pacing my time reasonably over a period of a few days, I found his explanation easy to follow. It includes a potentiometer which permits adjusting the straight signal versus vibrato signal resulting in a vibrato similar to that of the scanner/line box vibrato of the M series.

Here is Magnus, who plays organ wonderfully, demonstrating what Kon's vibrato mod sounds like. (It appears that Magnus does not have the upper drawbars full out. I don't know if that is stock L100 percussion).

High compliments & tusen tack to Kon!

    Best regards.

I don't think it's a '65, the "zero in the middle" model designations were gone by then if I remember right.

And, it's probably a wax cap organ? The tone generator capacitors drift on these old things, causing reduced brightness both of the "normal" tones and of course also of the percussion.

OK cool thanks Thor.and enor if the Tg.does have wax caps..that does not have nothing to do with the percussion circuit...something is wrong..I heard a l102 on line and the percussion is louder than mine...it just very low and can't seem to figure it out..

All tones emanating from the Hammond - normal tones and percussion tones alike - come from the main tone generator. If a filter is off, so that the output from that frequency is low, it will affect both normal tones and percussion.
