Hi! I’m new to the forum. I used the search function, but couldn’t find the answers I need. I appreciate everyone’s help!
I’ve got an M3 that was chopped by the previous owner. Knowing what I know now, I would have sprung for an unchopped one, but live and learn.
It has a 1/4 inch output, which I have used extensively for gigging, but I noticed it sounded muddy and distorted and nothing like the XK-1 I had been using in the past. My ear eventually got used to it and I just figured that was the difference between a real tonewheel organ versus a digital facsimile.
I had it open recently to repair some key contacts, and happened to notice the ‘phono’ RCA jack in the amp. I understand that this was to allow you to play your record player through the organ’s internal speaker to play along with your favorite records. I got curious and plugged it into a guitar amp (my Leslie is undergoing extensive mods) and man, what a difference. I actually have key click I never had before, and overall it is brighter and more full range and more Hammond-y, although quieter.
The 1/4 muddy jack is a lot hotter of a signal, which my Leslie needs, but it’s just too muddy and dark. The RCA just sounds miles better, even though I have to crank the amp a little more to get as loud.
Is it safe to use this RCA jack into a mic preamp for a boost into the Leslie, rather than using the 1/4 out? Are there any mods I need to do to this RCA jack to make it safer if it is, in fact unsafe?
Thanks a lot, everyone!
I’m glad to be here on this cool forum.
