  • Gregg Allman "Dreams" percussion

I've been working on "Dreams", and the perc on Gregg's Hammond really cuts through, to my ear. I can't quite get it right, and it occurred to me that maybe it's just how it was recorded. I fiddled with the perc cutoff on my console, turned up the gain in the doghouse, and dimed my Leslie. I haven't tried swapping out the tubes in the perc circuit yet. Ideas?

According to lore, the deal to get Gregg back was a new Hammond B3 and Leslie. 1969 showroom new. So caps on Ginny would be one source. You know that already. Have you tried C1 or C2?
The others were using Fender amps instead of Marshall’s on first album as well. Could of been sonic difference in studio.... moot point with close microphones.

Ludlow Garage 1970 has a good live version. Now I am intrigued to listen to the percussion on his organ.

Well, it occurred to me that since the perc is so forward, I should pull back on the drawbars, so: 444400000 C3 on/normal/fast/third ballparks it. My C3 is a 1956, non-TG recapped. Realistically, I should be dialing it in on my VR760, which is what I'm most likely to be performing the tune on, and that has enough tweakability that I can home in on "New 1969 B3" sound.

Going from memory I would think that slow as opposed to fast decay would sound more !ike the song.

Just my 2 bits: you can put a pot across the percussion resistor, and dial in as much ping as you want. I did this with my 1955 B3, so that I can dial it down to woody marimba or up to a very bright sound.

The thing about this rendition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBo_...&frags=pl%2Cwn is the vibrato signal applied to the organ. It is timed to the fast triplets of the 6/8 beat. How'd he do that?

Very interesting thread here. But as a side branch, that guitar solo was intensely creative...

this '63 A100/147 dials that in at about; Upper 558500000 C2 chorus 3rd Perc Norm Slow.
            Lower is 558830000 C2 chorus.
            Same for the '62 A102...except the 222 is not a 251 or 147.....
            Whenever I hear more keyclick it's a pretty sure bet a 145 is in use,not a 122.
That Lowery on Chest Fever (The Band)....sure barks! That's a brand new 145
with a Neumann U47 on it so a 122 sounds great but different!

            Marshall/Fender? Nah,more like 147/122.......IMO.

The frequency of the chorus is 7 Hz, which works out to 42 BPM, just need a decent drummer (or three).

In your video link, it looks like Warren Haynes' guitar is reinforcing the percussion attack. Derek Trucks is just amazing, his playing can get me emotional - and he pulls it off with so much passion and soul and still keeps a zen face. Haynes, who I also vastly admire has a permanent guitar face, heh.

              [Edit]
Derp! That's not right. 7Hz * 60 seconds = 420 (which makes most of the drummers I know happy). Divide that by 6/8 time and that should be 70 BPM, right?

How I came up with 42, I do not know, but fortuitously, I can blame it on the mice.

              ....

Thanks, Pete I'll give that a try.

I've always felt what makes this song is the shimmer of the chorus.

BTW the original version with Duane is responsible for a speeding ticket I got in 1972.

Possibly an M3/145? Just tried those yesterday....sounds even more like the record.
My comment had nothing to do with guitar amps, neither brand were on the organ track LOL.
Those registrations work fine on a spinet too.

When I caught the Allman Bros./Little Feat show(1991) at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto they had Fender and Marshall amps, that I recall.
Greg sang great as always and played his **s off too!Drum lugs were round,Camco?Awesome drumming by both participants!
Glad I saw them up close stage left! Actually heard their back line!Awesome man!
