  • M3 Poor Man's Foldback

Hi guys. Sorry to post on a topic that's been well documented on the forum but I searched for an answer to my questions and came up empty.

I'm about to attempt the upper poor man's foldback on my M3. I've watched the videos on youtube, but am still confused about the following:

    1) Both videos say to remove the back cover that covers all the wires. But my cover has a bunch of electronics/transistors/wires screwed onto it so how do I remove the cover without disturbing them? Do I have to unscrew the electronics as well? They appear to be wired to drawbars and other stuff. Confusing

    2) A few people have mentioned that after removing a few keys to raise/tilt the upper manual higher in order to gain better access to the terminals, they have had problems with the key contacts getting stuck and notes not playing correctly after reassembling. That sounds terrifying. What should I look out for when removing the keys/raising the manual, etc. so that doesn't happen to me? In other words, how risky is removing the keys and raising the manual? In the videos, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Thanks ahead of time for your help. I already did the lower manual mod and that was a breeze and made the organ sound great so I very much want to do this mod. But I have to admit, it sounds way harder and riskier than the lower manual mod and am unsure about it. Any comfort or warning you could give would be appreciated.

Make sure the genny is secured/tightened down.
Keys already off for cleaning? Way easier to get in there.
Keys still on? Remove the music rack and upper key backstop rail, bass pedal can,vib line box.
    You'll have duplicates on the 18 leads.One and a half octaves.....and only twelve tones.High C is actually #85,not 91.
Keep the upper keyboard level as you tilt.I use wood blocks below to raise the upper manual.

If I did it,so can you.

sound, succinct advice from Pete above.
I would add that you take your time, come up with a labeling system &/or take photos before you do something to help you stay organized, be sober in all manner during the project, enjoy yourself, find the zen in you becoming familiar with a piece of analog technology assembled by someone's gramma/grandpa all those years ago.
i have successfully added foldback to 3 hammond spinets; it will take as long as it takes.
