The early Hammonds were built with a 6-pin jack. Later models began using 5-pin jacks. This difference occurred when consoles had B+ power built in. The 6th pin was no longer needed.
9-pin connectors were added when 9-pin Leslies became popular. The 11-pin eventually became the standard still in use. No mains power goes through this connector and because of safety concerns and requirements the previous versions were discontinued.
I suspect more 5 and 6-pin models were built in total since those version Hammonds were built for 40 years. There is only 10 to 15 years of use with the higher pin count versions.

Were any Hammonds actually built with 9-pin connectors, or were they added as kits for 9-pin Leslies?I'm David. 'Dave' is someone else's name.Comment

Yes, from the early 1970s. Examples of 9 pin equipped Hammonds include the T500, 2107 Concorde and 4072 Regent. It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
