  • R-100 Percussion Switches - half down position

Greetings, I've just removed the top and decorative wooden panels and I'm looking at the percussion tab switches on the left hand side. They have 2 positions, with different switches on either side. Please can anyone explain what these are doing in the half down position? I can hear that something happens, but what exactly is going on? And is the half down position a legitimate use position or a side effect? (If that makes sense)

That type of switch is used in many Hammond models. It has switches both sides, as you say, and whether they are normally closed or normally open depends on how the cams on the "actuator bar" are made. That is, any one switch can work one way or the other and the function varies in different applications.

There is no intended middle position, it's more of a "side effect" (as you put it)

The half down position comes into its own on the T series giving loads of different vibrato options. Not intentional, but useful.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I went back to the schematics and I've worked out that the half position removes those harmonics from the drawbar settings - so whatever harmonics are used in the percussion voice are no longer present. I now recall reading something similar, probably on this forum, that tones were routed through the percussion tabs - or something similar. At some point I want to change the percussion voices to single harmonics rather than guitar / marimba etc. so I'll have to make sure the other tones get through OK.
