  • Woodworking on B3 housing

I´m on the way to build a new housing for my UK C2, for it is in a bad condition. I like better a B than a C housing. No plywood but full cherry. Are there some Bs out there, factorymade by solid wood, or are they all plywood and veneer? I found only 2 picts which look like, at least the edges

They are all veneered. In your picture, you're showing the very latest variant (starting in '69-'70) of the "B" cabinet, when they started skimping on finish and stopped veneering around the corners. Before that, it's still veneer - but done with a lot more finesse.

Is there any specific reason you don't want to try repairing the veneer? I did on mine and it work very well.

It´s not only the veneer, the curved lid is broken in the middle, a broken edge is missing and i don´t like the housings design even if it will look fine again. The organ is not originally in this housing, for the label shows C3 and the organ is definitively C2 ( ratched DBs, no Percussion and so on).
But everything works fine, astonishing after 14 years in an unheated garage. The Leslie on the same place seemed to be a toilet for mice and got a rebuild. Now I will build a new housing B3 style, but divisible and solid wood . I´m able to do that, but not working with veneer, I don´t like it for it fakes what it isn´t, but everybody as he likes.

Most likely the guts have been a B-2, and someone has done a swap between two organs. I understand your sentiment regarding the case, I've never liked the British style C-3s....

There were two styles of UK C3. The later version was simplified without the overhang on the upper lid and missing the mouldings below the manuals on each side. I had a UK 1962 C3 and it was the same as the US model.

Having said that, I prefer the model B case too ;-)

Hoaxel, I might be interested in having the lid and hinge when you get to the point of disposing of what you don't want, It migh fit the case I'm rebuilding a pile of C3 bits into.

At least in older cabinets blockboard and other cheaper/lighter core wood under veneer was used instead of solid hardwood. "Real" wood was only used for thinner parts, fallboard edges, etc. There is nothing wrong with veneered construction as far as core is made from the most suitable material for weight/strength/durability/stability... Just take a look at some expensive grand pianos, they have lot of veneered surfaces instead of thoroughly solid wood.

I have made some cabinets from birch plywood and it's pretty heavy material compared to softer solid wood core. On the other hand, guts of a tonewheel Hammond are bulky and heavy too, so the cabinet construction also needs to be strong, especially if the organ is going to be moved a lot.

looks fine, even the older style of the legs , legs removable? And if, how did you solve it?

I personally like the old style leg profile :)

This project was made several years ago to find out how organ total weight could be divided separate parts. Cabinet splits two halves, TG and preamp are in their own housings. As both keyboards are still left in upper part, it's still pretty weighty anyway.
