  • A100 missing a run of 9 tones on each manual

Ok, I'm baffled. I've got a 1959 A100 Hammond and its got a bit of an issue. If I pull one drawbar out and run through the keys, I'll have 9 notes out. Every drawbar has a different bank of notes out, but its consistent. It appear on both manuals. For example, if I pull drawbar 6 out, I don't have keys 7, 9,10,11,12,13,14,15,17. If I pullout drawbar #3 I don't have keys 31, 33, 34,35,36,37,38,39,41
Looking at the Hammond Keyboard/TG wiring chart, I have tested and have tones at the tabs on the back of the TG (test lead being applied and hearing the tones through an amp) So, I assume the TG is working right? What else could it possibly be? I've been searching and searching, and I'm not coming up with anything.

This section of the Hammond Wiki has some info: http://www.dairiki.org/HammondWiki/MissingTones

If the tone is on the TWG terminal strip, then most likely the problem lies in the wiring harness. The push back wire insulation can hide a break.

      Hello,

Generator 43,45..50,52 seems to work but produce no sound.

I don't beleive there is 9 wires cutted.

      Possible black foam problem.

Not likely to be a foam problem since the problem is identical on both manuals and on different drawbars. If the generator produces the frequencies in question, the problem must be in the harness.

Sounds like this organ has been moved without locking down the generator. I bet you'll find broken wires between the generator and the manuals, almost certainly right near the crotch in the harness where it connects to the first manual.

The physical orientation of the manuals and the tone generator in A100s seems to make them particularly prone to broken harness wires if moved without locking the TG. I've seen this many times.

guys are likely spot on here, its in the wiring harness . The wire snaps off so easy and the fact they are in a block means on a A100, like mine, it is most likely between the TWG and the upper manual lug. You can lose/break the wiring to the manuals upper and lower just by lifting the manual set up. Suggest you go at this from the front ..Lift the upper manual carefully and have a peak under the upper manual at the solder joints to the manual. look for lugs on the upper manual where there is only one wire not two. (in the block are where your notes are missing) the second will be there but just not attached. It will be the wire for the upper manual that is not attached. RE soldier it in place.

                Hey,
I finally had a chance to get back to this issue with the A100. I pulled both manuals, and set about testing all the connections, and indeed, right in the middle, I had a whole bunch of broken wires! Its really almost impossible to tell visually, because, the cloth jacket was still attached, but the wire on the inside was not making connection. Thank you all for your suggestions!

Glad you got it fixed. Like Wes said, I would bet this organ got moved without having the TG locked down -- either that, or someone did work on the manuals with the manuals tilted up and pulled too hard on the harness. Has anyone done a busbar cleaning on it?
