  • M3 Total refurbish No Vibrato and the E and A keys have bass

Thank you for reading. I am total refurbishing an M3. Just replaced the tone generator capacitors (had a bunch of faint keys, keys are much louder now) and am unable to get Vibrato AND the E and A keys have BASS accompanying with the correct tone(all draw bars out) in the middle octaves, Went over all the connections several times now on the tone generator and am unable to find either problem. Two things I did with this refurbishment as well is swap the foot pedal assy AND the drawbars out with an M model. The M3 foot pedals were very ugly scratched, rusted,(work to be done later) etc and the M3 drawbars had a broken black insulator between the drawbar holder and the rod/bar assy. They both looked compatible and fit. The drawbars are working in all the combinations. Everything came apart and went back together very well. Still need to replace caps in the AMP. since there is some good AMP 60 cy through the speaker. Just looking for a place to go and look. Kind of think that the tuning sounds great up both manuals and up the scale except for the bass on the E and A keys only and in the middle octaves and high octave on the top manual. I have another M3 to compare to but I've run out of comparisons. Don't have an Oscope. Could one of the capacitors be bad new? China caps. Something related to all of the E and A keys? Checked into the manual specifically on which filters to check thoroughly. M model Bass foot pedals not compatible? M model drawbars not compatible? Thanks for any help or replies.

You had both vibrato and non vibrato channels before, working? Retrace your work again? Swapped the 6AU6 tubes to check both channels work? Nothing?
Reflow the solder on the 6AU6 tube connections, and the terminal strip(green/yellow) carefully! Follow safe practices under there!
Clean the pins on the tubes and the sockets again.Could be as simple as that.....could be dendrites in the switchbox too.

If those M parts are installed correctly they should work just like M3 parts.

M pedals are always on and play by grounding to complete the circuit.Cold solder connection?
If you get bass notes without depressing a pedal the issue is with grounding at the tone generator filter circuit somewhere.
E's and A's sound like the most likely places to start.
Tone 5 and 10(bass pedals) at the non filtered output terminals ( on the filter circuits of an M3 but not attached to a coil or cap)
are grounding to lower or upper manual E and A keys somewhere. Resolder and check for grounding on those connections for starters.
Reflow the bass pedal to generator ground or at least meter it for continuity.
Magnify the area with good light and lens to locate the cold solder joint. Most likely culprit. If it plays both E and A on the same key?
Some wire is on the wrong terminal.

Bass pedals are working great. I did find the goober on my head. Had 2 wires switched on the tone generator wrong. That stopped the bass on the A and E keys. It was filter chokes 83 and 52. They are different on the other M3 where all the black wires spread apart as they come from the manuals below the manual shelf. Only one wire comes out in dead center of the mass of black wires and I remember now trying to figure out where it went on my drawing before desoldering. I made a drawing of all the wires as they are tied to each knot, numbering them and was confused that this one wire was outside of all the others. YES, everything was working before I started taking apart. I always do that after picking up an organ and delivering here before I do anything, I always fix all the problems first. Concentrating now on the Vibrato. I lifted the upper manual to see if something was crimped or open. One of the shielded cables going to the matching transformer case was bent over, I straightened it out however, do not know if that broke any of the wires within it's shield. Thank you for your help. I cleaned the vibrato scanner and it did have some oil in it but it was not bad. And it did work fine both speeds before I took the organ apart.

Vibrato small cap on back I removed and found the scanner was not spinning . Replaced the scanner with an M scanner and it's working fine. Looks like the bearing seized up on the very back where the contacts are. Thank you for your help!
