• Do M3's organ have an open back? Mine does. Is there grill cloth/backs for them?

    Hi all,

(new to organs/Hammonds - but always wanted one ... never could afford one ...):

I just bought a '60 M3 (love it). It has an open back. Is this the way they were made, or do they have grill cloth/backs on them.

If the did have grill cloth/backs on them, how would I find where to find one for my M3?

    Thanks for info!

Should definitely have a back. You may have to do a bit of woodwork and make one!

M3s do not usually come with a back. I have an M3 that was shipped to Australia with a back, so maybe export models do, but US domestic models with backs are as rare as you can imagine. I've seen genuine backs on eBay sell for more than the cost of an entire M3!

Interesting, Bails, the ones I've seen over here also have all had backs, so maybe the export-only thing is correct. However I'd have thought that even in the 50's there would have been some regulations about not having all that HT exposed. Suppose the cat, dog or baby crawled in!

Is there something like "It sounds better without the back" going on, and lots of people removed them becasue of that?

Hi, thanks for the replies everyone ... its actually 'my cats' that worry: don't want them to get back inside it. Right now I'll just hang a cloth over the back until I can make something w/ real grill cloth.

If it were a banjo (which happens to be one of my multiple instruments) I'd tell you that you could oder a resonator for your open back, but this isn't a banjo, I'm not a Hammond guy, I know almost nothing about Hammonds, but find them interesting.

The three M3s I've owned had no backs - but did have a curved piece of masonite that covered the TG.

No cats here - the Rat terriers have shown no interest in the amplifier...

I don't have a back for my m100. I covered the bottom half of the organ with a 2x4 piece of plywood. When I move I'll make a back for mine. The cats like any kind of starting motor. Any time the printer or the Hammond starts, they have to come watch.

I had an M3 in the mid-1950s, straight from the factory via the local Hammond dealer, and it had no back, only the masonite cover over the TWG.

All the terminalson theamplifierthat had any real voltage on them were under a metal cover, as I recall.

Most M3s were placed against a wall, so lack of a back was not a major issue. I do seem to recall that a cover was available from the dealer for performance locations where it was placed the other way around. The one I am mentally picturing had a grill cloth the full height of the organ, but only in the middle, aligned with the back side of the speaker, with wood panels finished the same as the organ on either side.

Model E, I've seen those but only onM100s.

The cloth opening in the middle would have made perfect sense on an M3I would think.

The M3 I have didn't come with a back panel also butholes are visible when you look behind the organ, where I imagined screws were used to hold the wooden board in place.

                      Thanks, Yeso.

What I don't remember is whether the back edges of the top, side panels, and base are finished so that the back panel fit in the opening; or whether they were not completely finished so that the back panel fit over the whole thing.

Mine is open back. (north america).

looks like it never had one, there are no obvious screw/nail holes or other fixtures to indicate a back.

I recommend peg board / particle board, thats what im going to use. Thats what is on my L-100...not very pretty...

Just how hot do thiose tubes get? i would hate to think of a cloth backing catching fire if it was touching a tube...

My M3, too, had only the curved TG cover. But here's what the factory finished backs look like:

                          (current Ebay auction, item #190201989319.)

I suspect (stateside) the finished back must have been an expensive option that generally only churches would elect, since in most homes the organ would be faced against a wall anyway (as ModelE indicated.) My A100 came from a church and had the finished back, apparently almost as rare for that model. PS my black Lab would probably want to get into the back to see where the interesting oil smell was coming from, but fortunately he's too big, the oaf!

...in case you didn't win the M3 back from earlier: here's another, mislabeled as a "D-3" back. (I don't believe there was ever such a thing as a Hammond D-3). Being mislabeled, it may go for a lot cheaper than the other one... good luck if you go after it. -TD
