  • CV with Leslie 222

Hey everyone, new to the forum. Just grabbed a CV with a leslie 222. Having issues with the motors speed, its stuck on fast. When i got everything, it came with the 222 as well as a DR-20 cab in which Im not using, so I just have the cv going to the 222. I put all new tubes in the 222 amp as well as a relay for the rotor speed. still no good and stuck on fast speed. When I manually hit the relay with my finger, the rotors do slow down so I know the relay is doing its job, but not when I hit the leslie switch on the organ. I jumped the wires on the organ switch but still no cange. Now someone mentioned the 428 box in the organ>? Is this something I should look into and what am I looking for? Any help would be awesome

Try hooking up the DR20 as well. It's possible the switching voltage was coming from that cabinet.

Thanks geo, unfortunately I got rid of that b/c it was in pieces. All amps, pre amp, speakers, and reverb tank were removed from the original cabinet and the person who sold it to me took them all out of the custom cabinet that was built for it. I didnt feel i needed that cabinet so i sold it .

Anyway i was hoping someone who works on hammonds may be able to help me out. I truly think it is the small little Leslie box in the organ that sends the switching signal to the relay in the Leslie amp but I'm not for certain. Anyway thanks again for the response

OK. Measure the DC voltage on the signal lines (pin 1&6) at the Leslie and see if you're getting the switching voltage. Should be high on slow, and low on fast.

Measure either pin 1 or 6 to ground.

Hey Geo, so I tested continuity on my leslie switch, and no continuity on chorale and meter was beeping on tremolo. So I know my switch is good. So if I go from pin 1 or pin 6 to gnd, what exactly should I be reading? And do I need to engage the leslie switch while Im testing? Also, my meter should be on DC voltage correct?

There should be a DC presence on pins 1&6 to ground in the neighborhood of 50Vdc or more when in SLOW. No DC voltage equals fast.

Great thanks Geo, really appreciate the feedback. I'll definitely give that a shot

So if Im not getting that 50vdc from those pins, do ya think the issue lies with that leslie control kit shown in the pic? Also, I was wondering if there's a way to bypass that 3H echo kit as well, I really think the problem lies in one of these 2 kits

See if your getting any DC on those two screws on the right hand kit. From screws to ground.

Ok will do, so those almost look like speaker wire attached to those 2 screws. So if no DC is coming from those screws, do you think it's a good chance that kit is shot? Again, thank you so much for walking me through all of this. I grabbed this organ in January, the first issue I had was I had to replace the run motor in the TG because it was shot, now I've been dealing with this leslie issue for 2-3 months now and I'm dyin to get this thing right. I got this from a church that had this CV sitting for decades not being used, so obviously it needed a lot of TLC to get it up and running. Thanks again

I doubt the kit is bad. The voltage for switching is likely coming from the Leslie, pin 5. This would be the same voltage source for the CV preamp. If you have sound, then that voltage must be present, or the organ was modified eliminating the need for that voltage. Perhaps you could post a picture of the whole back of the organ.

Here you go Geo, by the way, there is absolutely no voltage coming out of those 2 screw connections on that leslie kit, now i just had the organ running with no leslie connected and nobody playing the keys,. Man this is frustrating, i just want to be able to play with slow and fast speed

From the pics of the inside, it looks like you got a pretty clean organ. The guys here on the forum should be able to get you up and running but if not, I know of a good tech in your area.

It wouldn't happen to be Paul @ M&S Organ in Chicago would it? I actually bought my run motor and a couple resistors from him when I couldn't get my tonewheel generator to work. He offered for me to take my amp out of my leslie 222 to see if its the amp that's causing my motors to not change speeds.
