  • M3: the secret "halfway" vibrato

    Hello everyone,
does anyone know what is happening inside the Normal/Small switch when it's set halfway? The effect, along with the V/C set to vibrato, is interesting and very different from Normal or Small, and doesn't sound like an "in-between" setting. I'd describe it as a deeper vibrato, but with less of the "theatre organ" sound of the usual vibrato.

on my M3 it is similar and on a Friends M100 it´s just the same, no wonder, there are about 8 pairs of contacts moved and it´s kind of random, wich are open or closed on halfway.

It's even more interesting on the M100 and T series spinets, which have more options to start with and more 'secret' combinations, especially those using the Celeste Vibrato variations.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I did some further testing with my M100 and here's what I've found out: the effect does not happen because the contacts are open (actually this causes a helicopter noise), but it's when two or more pairs or contacts are joined together. To me this makes the "Vibrato" position much more usable. Somehow I feel like it's less cheesy and more Leslie-like. I can't explain exactly why it does this but at least I know how to reproduce it!
