  • Alternative tuning of Hammond XK-3?

I'm in an experimental mood lately, and felt like digging around in the options for my XK-3. I was wondering, is it possible to customize the tuning by individual tonewheels or by manual? For instance, if I wanted to use a non-western mode while soloing, could I create a preset in a Balinese or Turkish mode, with a C-half sharps, or F quarter flats? Or would it be possible detune, not just the whole instrument, but one manual, 50 cents sharp, giving me 24 notes in each octave, between the two manuals? Thanks for humoring me as I try to play around with what this instrument can do!

I've never dug into it, but I doubt it. Part of the Hammond sound is its own distinctive tuning and you would lose that sound by altering the tuning.

I assume you've gone right through the owner's manual? If not, then that's where to start. If you have done so and not found anything, then that's your answer.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I'm not that familiar with changing the tuning, but just a quick look at the manual shows a way to make custom tonewheels and transpositions. There might be something in there that you can use. Check it out.

It's quite fascinating hearing non-equal tempered music as originally heard by composers such as JS Bach...
Some DAW's and synths allow alternative tunings.
You'll suddenly understand why they say D Minor is the “saddest” key.
        Current:
1971 T-202 with Carsten Meyer mods: Remove key click filters, single-trigger percussion, UM 16' drawbar volume correction. Lower Manual bass foldback.
Korg CX3 (original 1980's analogue model).
1967 Leslie 122 with custom inbuilt preamp on back panel for 1/4" line-level inputs, bass & treble controls. Horn diffusers intact.
2009 Marshall 2061x HW Plexi head into Marshall 4x12 cabinet.

        Former:
        1964 C3
        196x M-102
        197x X5
        197x Leslie 825
