Digital to Replace Spring Reverb in PR40?

Hello.</P>


As indicated in my signature line, my PR40 speaker has an Accutronics (3-spring) reverb unit replacing the original necklace unit. This works all right, but has the usual metallic "twang" associated with the spring units.</P>


I was wondering whether anyone has experience with replacing the spring unit with a digital reverb in the speaker itself, not the console. It would appear that the PR40 reverb driver has plenty of output voltage, and that the digital output could be connected back in to the amplifier reverb channel right after the one-stage transistor preamp. Would this work? Any idea how itmight sound? I am interested only in approximating a large reverberant space - no special effects.</P>

Purists might shudder at the thought of replacing Mr H's beautiful necklace, but I have to say that I've heard of it being done, with small units like the Alesis Microverb, but I'm not sure exactly how it was done. Your thoughts on this seem to be sensible and if you get the level etc right, should work well.</P>


You asked about the sound. Well I've used a few similar units over the years and have been impressed. Lowrey used to build them into their top range organs when I was with them and they sounded just fine. In fact, I think they've just gone back to using them again. You didn't get many parameters to play with. Room size, reverb length, pre-delay and wet/dry balance I think. But that would be enough for what you're doing. If it works, I might even add reverb to my 760! Hmm, a 760RV, I suppose.</P>

I tried putting a Yamaha Rev-7 in my C-3 in place of the Organmate reverb. You will need more gain after the device to bring the overall output back up to normal. I think putting it in the tone cabinet will need similar fixin'.. Tim

Thanks to you both. As happens with equipment this age,this cabinetjust experienced an arc-overin one of the output tubesthat took a few other things in the amplifier with it, so it might be a while before I get back to this project. I'll let you know how it worked when/if it materializes again.
