• How to oil my Leslie 147

After several scheduled service visits canceled by the organ tech, I will attempt tomorrow to connect the Leslie 147 to the organ by myself. (Thanks Chris and David from Hammondzone and the folks here)

I'll need to know what do I need to oil (I have Hammond oil from Goff), how, where, how much, etc. I see a hole on the side of the horn with an "oil here" but I don't know how much oil should I get into there. Also I read about oiling the motors, etc.

The Leslie seems to be in living room condition and came from a state sale. (It looks super clean)

Please, your advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Bubus,

Go to captain-foldback.com and click on "Leslie" at the bottom/left of the page. Then click on the icon for Leslie manual downloads then the 147 owners manual.

The Leslie manuals are quite good and will answer all of these questions for you. Also, you do not have to use Hammond oil for the motors on your Leslie. Sewing machine oil or 3 in1 will work just dandy. Clean all the dust out, adjust the belts and clean the tube sockets, speaker plugs and AC plugs/jacks. I put the trebble rotor from mine through the dishwasher (top rack) with the "heated dry" turnedOFF to clean it. That really worked great! You have to remove the V21 driver from the bottom (three screws) first to get the rotor out.

Best of luck with the new toy!

      Hi,

So Hammond oil is no good? (Is the only one I have at home, aside olive oil:)

How do I adjust the belts?

The tube sockets and motors look like new.(I cleaned the dust already)

      Thanks

Don't put the treble rotor from an old 31H in the dishwasher unless you want mush!

Hammond oil will work just fine. I just save it for Hammond TWGs as the stuff is kind of expensive, nine bucks for a little 4oz bottle. That stuff is $288 a gallon! The upper rotor should not need adjustment. The spring loaded idler should take care of everything. On the bass rotor, set it up just slightly tigher than necessary to avoid slipping. You loosen the wingnuts that mount the motor to make the adjustment. If you haven't already done so download and print that 147 manual from Captain-Foldback.

Your Leslie will perform better if you clean the tube sockets and all connections with DeOxit D5 regardless of how the sockets/pins/connectors look. You cannot see the layer of corrosion that hinders the flow of electrons through these parts. How old is it? I bet it has never been cleaned. I clean up every newly aquired piece of gear. It makes a huge difference in tone, noise and power. Trust me on this one.
