• Funky Sounds Coming From My Leslie

    Hi all,

I'm fairly new to Hammonds and organs, in general for that matter. I've searched multiple forums and email lists for a similar issue but have found nothing.

I have a CV hooked up to a 122. I got the 122 at the beginning of March and was extremely happy with the pair fora little over amonth. Then, it started.

While I'm playing, this distorted screechingand crackling sound comes out of the leslie. It's not constant, but it happens a few times every time I play and lasts 5-10 seconds.I can hear the organ still underneath this awful sound. It sounds like a mechanical screech coming from a poorly oiled motor, but the odd thing (or what I find odd) is that the sound is coming through the speakers.

I am completely baffled and have no idea where to even start looking for the problem. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

...not sure about the sound coming through the speaker, but I have heard Leslie motors that can make an awful racket for want of oil. I just resurrected a 760 that had been in someone's garage since about 1978. When I first cranked it up, there was a terrible screech from the lower fast motor. So I pulled out the lower motor stack and oiled it; it continued to screech for another day or two while the oil wicked through the pads to the bearings, then all quiet and smooth ever since. Yours *could* be mechanical, and may be just an (aural?) illusion that it's coming through the speakers. One way to troubleshoot: does the screech happen on both speeds of the Leslie? What happens if you switch speeds while it's screeching? If switching speeds makes the noise go away, there's your trouble; if not, you know it's electronic... in which case, I respectfully step aside for wiser heads to take over (H101-?) Good luck with it. Scott

It's also pretty easy to test the unit with the speakers disconnected... just pull the shovel connectors off the terminals on the speakers and let them hang (make sure they aren't touching anything) while you crank it back up.

If the sound goes away, you can unplug all the motors, and try playing through it statically, and then plugging one motor in a a time.

Some combination of the above should allow you to nail the noise to one of the four motors, or one of the two speakers. Of these problems, noises from the motors will be the easiest to fix.

Errrrrrrrrrrr....Tubes really don't like running open circuit, possible damage here. Don't run a tube amp with no load (speakers).Disconnect the motors, just unplug them at the amp and your questions will be answered.Plugging them back in one at a time is a good idea if the noise went away. You should still lube both motor stacks however.

If you want to run motors only, pull the power tubes from the amp (2 X 6550s).

This happens to me with my 145 sometimes. If it only happens when you first start it up and goes away, it's probably just the old tubes becoming microphonic or just acting like >40 year old tubes. It also could be the vibrato scanner acting up.I have that problem with my M3 sometimes even when the vibrato is off. I'm not sure what the solution would be. I just ignore it because it usually goes away after 10 minutes or so. Hopefully that sets you in the right direction anyway. It's tough for us to diagnose without hearing the sound.
