  • M3 almost no sound

Ok guys , I got my m3 home , brought it in and wiped it down cleaned up the outside cabinet , vacuumed some dust and dirt from inside around the amp . I was going to wait for oil but my 15 yo son was itching to play . So I started it up and uh oh !! Almost no sound and a little fuzzy from the speaker . I pulled the tubes out and wiped them off , still nothing . Visually nothing broke or burnt wiring . I did see a funky looking connection on the speaker almost don't look factory .... but it's making all sounds like it should but very faint like almost nothing . Could it be the 5G4U ?

Could be someone wired it for a Leslie, headphones, a guitar amp, or any combination of that and more.
After all, not many like the sound of a stock speaker competing with their Leslie.
Once you enter the realm of 'non-standard wiring' then anything is possible. Only your voltmeter can know for sure.

Or it could be a tube, I suppose.

tiredoldgeezer yea I get it , the wiring don't really look like a butcher job just a funny looking connection . I guess about the speaker , we're the wires soldered about 3” from the speaker magnet from the factory ?
btw .... how many volts at the speaker should there be ?

Can you post a nice closeup picture of where the wires attach to the speaker terminals? The black and green wires carry the audio and they need to go from their little plug in the rear of the amp to the speaker without any breaks along the way.

On my first M3 the sound became intermittent and then quit entirely- one of the solder lugs on the speaker fell off!

How does it respond when using the expression pedal?

tpappano ...... I'll post the pics here , I did figure out that someone had been working in here before , new power cord and the big rectifier tube 5U4G has been replaced . Don't know if that means anything or not .... here's the pics .

WHOA! That's _very_ dangerous. The bare, uninsulated splice in the field coil wire - that's lethal voltage exposed right there!

as far as the expression pedal goes , You can hear a little change . Initially it was acting almost backward . That is all the way down or open was fainter than up or off .

If the problem is that it's bare and not insulated ... Well, what do you suppose? ;)

Well I can re tape it up (power off unplugged of course) .... the tape on the black wire is very brittle as well . So I could retape them . Think that could be the issue ?

Please don't tape them. Replace them. It may be part of the problem, it may not. But it needs to be fixed either way.

                    enor IT WORKS !!!!!
dont know exactly what I did but I did do 3 things .......
                    1) re taped that bare connection
                    2) removed the 3 tubes that had the rf protectors and wiped them off .
                    3) gave the speaker plug a good wiggle on the amp where it plugs in .

                    It cranks now !!!
thanks for all the input everyone !!
