• FIXED: Leslie 122 Crackle

Hey Guys I'm new here and this is my first post so please be patient with me...[;)]

I have a leslie 122 ( mounted in a 147 frame ) connected to an M-3 trough a 038208 connecting kit. Everything was working fine but one day the started acting up. I can start the organ fine, It'll play through the speaker. but as soon as the lamps get warmed up in the leslie it starts to make loud clicks and I can see the OC3 rectifier flash purple with every click.

What's the best way to confirm if it is a tube problem and which tube I need to replace IF I DON'T HAVE A TUBE TESTER AND I DIDN'T BUY REPLACEMENT TUBES YET?

    Thanks for your answer.

The tube that is flashing purple is toast, so plan on a replacement before you use it again, and for it's mate if it has one.[li][I]

Thanks for the prompt response. May I ask if The purple thing is a normal symptom of a lamp dying or could it have been triggered by something else within the leslie?

That tube is the rectifier tube in the Leslie amp. It is part of the power supply and helps convert AC voltage to DC to power the amplifier. If it shorts, it can damange the power transformer and other components. DO NOT opperate the Leslie until the tube (lamp, valve) is replaced! You are going to "let the smoke out" of that thing if you run it without replacing that tube.

Typically this tube lasts a very long time and its failure is due to age and hours of use. Other things can cause its demise but it is unlikely as you say the Leslie worked fine before this "purple flash" started. A new pair of 6550 power tubes might be a good idea but that is your call.

OC3's give off a purple glow in normal service - if it is flashing it
may be about to go. There may be other problems such as the
electrolytic caps and plate resistors that should be checked as well.

Alpine67 is correct. The OC3 is not a rectifier but a gas-filled voltage regulator tube. The 122 amplifier has a solid state rectifier which delivers full voltage immediately when the amplifier is powered up. Without it, the voltage could get too high until the tubes warm up and start drawing current.

If it normally has a glow and then flashes brightly, it itself could be going bad, or it could be indicating downline trouble such as bad filter capacitors or possibly even bad output tubes.

              UPDATE:

              I finally got it working!!!

              When I
opened the 122's AMP, I found the orange wire from Pin 6 to the
Fast/Slow relay that was broken at the relay's connection. I simply
soldered it back & I'm now up and running again.

              Thanks a
lot guys for pointing me to the right direction. I've decided that the
organ was worth putting some time into so I'll start a Full
restauration. of both the M-3 and the Leslie 122. You guys will hear
from me A LOT for a few weeks[:$]

I'm glad I found this board...
