• Which Leslies with M-3?

Alright! I love the sound of my M-3. It's so warm and beautiful and the vibrato is to kill for. But I know that Leslie wont make it worse to put it mildly. I've done some search here on the forum but would like to hear from you which type of Leslie would suit it best. I live on an isolated island in the north and we don't have Leslie stores so it's eBay and the likes that I depend on.

I do all sorts of music. Pop, jazz, acoustic folk, film, rock... So it would be interesting to know what you think..Do I need the big famous ones or can I get away with a cheaper single speed Leslie. Somehow I feel like I have to match the age of the Hammond with the speaker, The organ is '58 model. I guess I would like a Leslie from somewhere in the neighbourhood. Is that silly?

    So! Whatd'ya think?

Not a silly idea at all, but probably not necessary. You could get something like a 21H single speed but it won't be cheap. A later 122 would give you two speeds, but you'd probablystill pay a bit of a premium over the 147. A 145 would just be fine, too.

All these twin rotor leslies cost $$$, and the only real cheaper alternative would be something like a 25 or a 125. Or, perhaps one of the solid state models like the 760 or 770. OK, no tubes, but you're driving the leslie with a tube organ and unless you want that tube overdrive, you might be quite happy with the sound. You'd certainly be happier with the price.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I thought my M-3 was Good, but since I hooked up the 122, it's HEAVEN...

How good are you at DIY? you could try to find a non working 122 AMP and some parts and do the rest yourself. You might save a few hundreds like that.

Seems like if shipping is going to be a significant cost, you should go all out--once. If you buy a $200 Leslie 25 and spend another $200 in shipping, you have a $200 amp that you paid $400 for. If you pay an extra $200 for a $1500 145 or the like, it doesn't seem so bad. I gig with an M3 and 145 and I love it. The 6W family--147, 145, 47, 45, 44, 25, 125, etc. has, IMHO, the easiest hook-up, and works with the most Leslie models.

Now, that's good thinking! Now I only have to tell my wife that it's actually cheaper to buy a more expensive Leslie!!! [H]

Thanks, guys. All good stuff. I'm a little weak for the single speed Leslies since that's how they were in '58 when my M-3 was made.

And I'm loving the sound from my Hammond even if it's not "Leslied". So I could live happily with Stop and Fast.

          I'm still thinking about it.

I also learned that Leslies for the European market were made in Denmark so there should be some Leslies around here in Scandinavia. Running on the right frequency and all. So maybe I don't have to import all the way from the States.

Another thingyoumight want toconsider is tall cabinet(122,147)type, vs short (145,142). If you play pedals, the taller cabinet provides more bass due to its larger internal volume. I refinished and modified a 46W cabinet to take the place of a burn damaged 145 I had been using. I took all the guts out of the 145 and put them in the 46 cabinet. It sounds like I added another 50 watts to the low end! The volume of the lower half of the pedals increased significantly. Just my 2 cents.....

              The M3 + lowboy leslie, like a 145, is a classic combination.
