I'm wondering how many T524 owners there are out there....The model I have has much thicker wood paneling (than the US ones) and a thick plywood backing panel and an extra vent on the side for the leslie sound...I'm wondering if all the Boosey and Hawkes ones were the same or they just decided to do that to a few....
Richard
The UK had the 'bog standard' T524 cabinet styling, same as yours. Same vent at the left hand side for the leslie. I thought all the T500s had that vent.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
in the past, and perhaps still today, imported items to South Africa such as organs may have been shipped in incomplete format. Meaning that the item would be ordered in semi-assembled or incomplete state to save on import taxes. The tax rates would be substantially higher on for example a complete organ but should the shipment be in say cabinets and insides separately the tax would be lower. In this manner some items, such as the organ in question may even have been shipped without a back cover. upper wood panels or perhaps just the inside works, leaving the importing distributor to finish the organ according to the broad factory specifications. This would account for different kinds and sizes of wood, back panels etc as mentioned.
The Allen Chapel organ we recently purchased for our church came without a back cover panel which appears to confirm this. Also on an old Gulbransen organ I had to euthenise the rotary speaker motor differed substantially from the USA version and the transformers were also different (there were two - one to lower our 230 volts down to 110 and then another to decrease the voltages even further to the designer's specifications). The wood on the cabinet was also more substantial - in fact, so sturdy that I decided to keep the cabinet. It currently houses one of my VPO setups.
That side vent on the picture looks suspiciously like the design of the one that was on my old Gulbransen.

This is an interesting thread. May I ask where you got this specimen from? As far as I know there were very few, if any organs exported from SA and those that did find their way to other areas of the world probably traveled with their owners who may have relocated. Most organs that were and are used in SA are imported. Here and there one might find a locally produced one but I doubt even that. I have a sweet little pump organ with a SA manufacturer (distributor) name tag on it and nowhere is the real name of the original US manufacturer to be found. It turned out to be a true US model with even the solid wood cabinet having been made in the US. That one is one of my favorites.

Hi Nico,
I bought it off a guy in Waihi NZ,,,he bought it off a guy who emigrated from Australia to NZ...and brought the organ with him ,,I don't know if he was South African or where he bought the organ sorry..but someone took a lot of trouble to beef up the cabinet ....I think maybe a church owned it and they had that very churchy back panel made for it with vents in it...so the organ was meant to be looked at from behind...if you know what I mean...
How you coping with virus?
Richard
Thanks Richard for the information. This confirms my suspicions that the SA organ found its way across the pond together with its owner...I trust that you are enjoying the beast and thanks for giving it the TLC these older ones need.
Our country so far has been lucky with this virus thing in that we have relatively few cases recorded so far. Although we are on lock down many people in some parts of the country are moving about and some seem to disregard the restrictions and sanitary recommendations altogether. This gives rise to fears that we will likely see an extension of the lock down period. In the small town where we live there has been only one confirmed case and we are all staying inside and at home. This is also a good time to unpack, dust off, re-purpose and throw away. I have already gotten rid of lots of junk - fortunately the trash boys still do their work on a weekly basis.
Tomorrow is Easter and it will be the first time in my entire life that we will be unable to attend church and whichever way you are experiencing this virus phenomenon, enjoy Easter!
I also wish everyone of the friends we have made on this Forum a very blessed Easter!
