Hammond rust

  • Hammond rust

    How do you guys treat rust that has attached the various metal parts (see pic). So far I used steel wool to polish it away and then painted it with either zinq primer or this Hammerite metal paint for galvanised.

    Hi, last year I took the manuals out of a C-3 that I had acquired in a pretty run down state. After removing all of the gunk that was in them, there was quite an amount of residual rust in there that I decided to deal with. I used wet and dry sandpaper to get the 'crunchy' rust off and then applied phosphoric acid (nasty stuff!) to neutralise the rust. Following that, I used wet and dry (as a dry paper) to clean up and prepare the surfaces for final spray. After masking off appropriately. I chose to use a rust inhibiting epoxy enamel directly (no gal u/c). I was pretty pleased with the hardness of the finish and the fact that the original pressed steel is well sealed from the atmosphere. I do not think that I will be revisiting these manuals in my lifetime ... :)

    Many prefer a direct coat of cold-galvanized ZInc paint, but equally, your paint choices also look ok to me.

      Wow, that looks nice. I will aim to get a similar result. What kind of grease did you use on the preset bars? Did you open up and cleaned the percussion switch?

        I didn't use anything special grease wise, just some off the shelf non-gumming blue stuff. Many people use white lithium grease. One little trick that I use with the upper manual perc switch (which is phenolic, and easily broken) is to disassemble the unit and temporarily place the phenolic upright inside (see pics). You can then safely handle the casing for cleaning, buffing, masking etc without fear of breaking the phenolic switch upright. If you break that, it is a RPIA and $$'s to find a replacement ->don't ask me why...:)
