  • Hammond H-143 Making Noise

    Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a hammond H-143 and everything on it works great, it just makes a sustained tone a minute or two after I start it up. Messing with the drawbars, reverb, percussion, vibrato or celeste doesn't change the sound, but the volume pedal and volume soft switch change how loud it is. I've replaced the capacitor and some of the tubes on the Organ, so I'm not 100% sure where its coming from. If any of you know what's up that would be awesome! I've attached a video of the sound.

Hi, Blake. Welcome to the forum! Does it have a harp board under the top deck as viewed from the back? That sounds like what my E-100 did when a harp circuit shorted out. I ended up lowering the board and snipping out the faulty circuit. I found out which frequency the tone was by downloading an app for my iPhone called "Analyzer." That app says your tone is around 937.5 Hz. 932.3275, according to

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_key_frequencies

which is A#/Bb. What's cool is that a person with perfect pitch might have been able to tell you that without an app...

      Hello!

Thanks for responding! I do have a harp board on a little door that swings out of the back of my organ. I'll look for a messed up circuit on mine

      thanks,

There are also several circuits engaged with a key press on Hammonds. I suppose one of them could be stuck.. The traditional repair is to operate the key a hundred times.

I don't remember now how I found the faulty harp curcuit... but I think touching the diode end with a insulated tool (screwdriver) might indicate the circuit with the short by changing the tone. Good luck!
