  • H100 dismantling question

Hi, I have the following problem: I have a Hammond H100 Organ, which is very heavy, about 200 kg. I want to carry it into a flat which is on the 2nd floor. The only way is via a narrow outdoor staircase. At three turning points the organ has to be lifted so that the keyboard is above the handrail, which can't be removed. It is way to heavy to lift it with 2 or 3 people that wound fit on the strairs.

So I thought a good solution would be to remove some very heavy parts to make it lighter. Do you have ideas which parts can be removed and reinserted without too much fuzz, i.e. the amp and preamp? Or the power supply? Speakers? Or is it too delicate to remove anything? I don't want to ruin anything.

Unfortunately it is currently in storage and I can't open it up to have a good look.

    Thank you for any tips!

There is rather little of the main bulk that can be removed easily. If it has an internal Leslie then maybe that could be removed, and maybe the top panel.

You might insure that the staircase is able to handle that much weight.

Psu and main amp, and speakers... Probably about 70lb

Everything else is fairly well stuck

Yeah, that was my guess as well. Would be quite a difference and hopefully enough. The staircase is new and can handle the weight. Thanks for the replies!

Back in the day (and by that I mean back in the late 60s/early 70s) when organs sold like hot dogs at a ball game, we had professional piano and organ movers who performed daily miracles, successfully delivering heavy instruments to homes with varying layouts and with seldom a scratch. I guess my point is, if there are still any of these businesses around, and there may very well be moving companies that have the experience and still move pianos (which typically weigh more than any electronic organ), I would contact them about moving the organ. If not, keep in mind that an H probably weighs in at around 375lbs, and even if you remove the power supply chassis, amplifier chassis, and the 15" speaker (I estimate that to be about 75lbs total), you'll still have close to 300lbs of awkward, hard-to-manage weight. If you have organ dollies, I would recommend using them, mainly because they provide heavy duty handles that greatly facilitate managing the weight. And I'd also recommend finding 4, big, beefy, strong young guys; two at the bottom and two at the top. Best of luck!
Over the years: Hammond M3, BC, M102, B3, four X77s and three PR-40s, a Thomas Electra and a Celebrity, three Fender Rhodes, Roland HS-10, HP-2000, HP-600, RD-600, JV-880, a thing made by Korg (?), two Leslie 910s, 122, 257, 258, 247, two 142s, and three custom-built Leslies. Wow, way too much money spent!
