Hi everyone. I am about to take delivery of a Hammond X77. I am a little worried about getting it into the house. Does anyone know if it is easy enough to remove the console from the legs. And how risky would in if the organ was up-ended?! Many thanks for your advice. Jim.

Hi, the main problem with separating the cabinet is that the pedal contacts are permanently wired. All the rest could be disconnected with the plastic connectors, but because of the pedal contacts, I would say removing the console from the base isn't really an option.
In my opinion, putting it on its side is perfectly fine, I've done it often with my X77. Just lay down a piece of plywood and a blanket or some cardboard.
Also, as you may already know, that there are no bolts to lock down under the tone generator.

The organ should go through a standard door. As bourniplus says, the pedal connections between the base and console are an obstacle to separating the two. It's doable, and I have done it, by unsoldering the pedal wire harness from the tone generators.
If the console is a tight fit through your door, I'd also be concerned about getting the X-77 Leslie through it as well. Again a standard door should not be a problem.
One other tip: never place the weight of the organ on the front part of the legs. They will snap off.

Thank you both for your feedback. My issue is more the fact that the approach to our front door has steps coming up to the doorstep at a 90 degree angle and I am concerned the organ won't get around the angle in its natural orientation. A gentle tilting so it was on one end would see it getting around ok I think. The owner did inform me that the tonewheel generator did not need to be locked down - if that is what you are confirming then I guess that is one less thing to worry about!

Working for the Chicago dealer in the '60s and '70s, our staff of movers always moved all the various models, early and late, on end on a standard 4 wheel dolly. Sometimes they belted the organ to the dolly so they could carry the organ and dolly together up stairs. Never had any ill effects in hundreds of moves.Larry K

Looks good! That X-77L is a big beast of a Leslie!
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
