  • L-110 Motor Issue, should I buy?

    Hey there, first post, sorry if there's any rules I missed!

    I'm currently talking to someone selling an L-110 with a leslie 125. I'm not sure of the state of the leslie (I have less experience here to size it up), but the Hammond seems to be in beautiful share. Thing is, it's motor is having trouble getting going. I'm attaching a video I took of the mechanics in the back, hopefully it's enough to decide if this organ leslie combo, at $350, is worth my buy / effort?

    Looks like the generator is all seized up from lack of lubrication - the first part of the shaft turns, but the rest is stuck so it binds up after a while. Good news is the motor has continuity, so it's fine. Get it!

        Hammond oil, replace the run capacitor in the silver housing next to the motor, and patience. Tonewheel General Hospital can provide the first 2, you provide the last.

          Buy it.
          Put Hammond oil into it as per the many instructions available on the topic.
          Do a naptha flush if it's really gummed up.
          Replace the motor run cap immediately.
          Likewise,you'll probably need to replace the electrolytics in the power supply and amp.
          Current:
          1971 T-202 with Carsten Meyer mods: Remove key click filters, single-trigger percussion, UM 16' drawbar volume correction. Lower Manual bass foldback.
          Korg CX3 (original 1980's analogue model).
          1967 Leslie 122 with custom inbuilt preamp on back panel for 1/4" line-level inputs, bass & treble controls. Horn diffusers intact.
          2009 Marshall 2061x HW Plexi head into Marshall 4x12 cabinet.

            this is all very helpful indeed. It hasn't been used in decades, so I'm going to go ahead and naptha, as well as replace the cap. I'll post back after!

              I did the flush, a few days on and this is the state of things:

              I'm still waiting on the motor run cap from TW general, in the meantime is there more work I could be doing that might at least get the tonewheel generator moving? Even with the spring detached, the twg faces resistance regardless of which way you turn it, almost as if there were another spring holding it in place somewhere else

                I took a video of the gears underneath, there are a few that are incredibly stuck, while most are moving freely

                  Try shooting lubricant directly to the bearings on each tonewheel, WD40 will dissolve gunk, but lubricate immediately with Hammond oil since wd40 is a solvent , not a lubricant. Patience, it may take a while. Do not use great force trying to get things moving as more damage may happen.

                    Looks like the 2nd section of the main shaft is frozen solid. Oil directly, wait, repeat.

                      I used to have some trouble on that as well with my H-100. It looks that you have lifted up the TWG already. I took in the end some q-tips, soaked them with Hammond oil on one end and oiled each bearing individually from underneath. This helped finally and was 1 hour of work with getting somehow oily fingers.

                      And please replace the motor cap (2 uF @ 350 V is what I took).
