<p class="MsoNormal">I recently purchase my first Hammond organ, a beautiful
1950s RT-3 model. I have yet to buy a Leslie for it, but am going to check out
a 147 tomorrow morning. The Leslie is a 2 hour drive from my house, and since
I’m new to all of this, I’m trying to gather as much information and be as
prepared as possible before I head over there.</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The previous owner of the RT-3 ran it through a Leslie 122
and it sounded great. From what I understand (which is very little), these
Hammonds were built to connect directly to a Leslie 122 without any
modifications necessary, just with the standard 6-pin cable. I was told the
same is not true for the 147, and that I would need a 6W type connector/outlet
on the Hammond (though I would use the same cable).</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I took a look at the back of the Hammond this morning and
saw that there were several outlets in the back with the following labels:</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
</span></span>AC (which obviously is for power)<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
    </span></span>Main 1<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
    </span></span>Main 2<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
    </span></span>Echo<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
</span></span>Switched (this one already seemed to be connected
    internally)<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.2in;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">
    </span></span>Non-Switched<o:p></o:p></p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Unfortunately, I have no experience with this, and am
generally pretty slow when it comes to technical stuff, so I feel like I’m
    flying blind here.</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal">What are all those connection points?</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal">What do those labels mean?</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal">How do I know if I can connect it to a Leslie 147?</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal">If I can’t connect it to a 147 as it is currently, what do I
    need to do?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Also, what should be looking for when inspecting the Leslie?</p><p class="MsoNormal">Any other advice is greatly appreciated!
    </p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I’ve already tried looking up this online, but only found scattered
bits and pieces of info that I couldn’t understand. For example, I don’t know
    what a G:G and AO means.</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Would anyone be kind and patient enough to guide me in the
    right direction?</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>

I'm no expert, but have done a little, so while you're waiting for somebody on the list to reply, go here http://www.dairiki.org/HammondWiki/HammondOrgansand see if it helps.</P>

Main is the organs primary tone cabinets, whatever model they are.</P>

Echo is the secondary cabinets, maybe farther away, whatever model they are.</P>

There are adapters to hook up leslies with pins that don't match up exactly.</P>

Switched is probably a female connector for just an electrical plug. You plug a component in that you want to turn on when the organ is powered up. Unswitched is an identical plug, but you have to turn the component on manually.</P>

Do a search on this forum for rt-2 and rt-3 and other stuff like Leslie hookup; there's a ton of stuff already on here.</P>

Since these organs are still very popular, and you have the 'concert' model, it will all come together. Maybe if you post your city you'll get a referral to a Hammond tech near you.</P>

Labled outlets, thats a switch. If I put that rig together, and I didn't, the six pin outlet labled echo would be the outlet for the Leslie 122. Mains are typically Hammond tone cab outlets. If the console is wired for a 122 you will have to change very little for the 147 but don't plug the 147 into the 122 socket until it has been confirmed that it is correctly wired for your Leslie.. Do not plug a Leslie cabinet into a tone cab outlet, damage to the leslie will result.</P>

You should be able to trace back the wiresfrom the echo socket and we can help figure out how it is wired. Other than a difference in input type the 122 and 147 Leslie are identical. The 122 may have some advantages in commercial installations where long cable runs are required but at home or even stage use the 147 is my favorite horse.</P>

If the seller can demonstrate the Leslie for you that would be best. Leslie cabs are pretty bullet proof and can be serviced for little money in most cases. Being able to hear the speaker and horn with no rattles pretty much asured you the drivers are good and the amp works properly. Most need new o-rings on the motors and a good cleaning and oiling. $1000 is a fair pice for a nice clean fully working 147 Leslie (in the US anyway). I would expect to pay a bit more if it is exceptional and less if it has cosmetic or electromechanical defects.</P>

      Best of luck,</P>
