• CV / BV Question

Hey guys, I've studying lately about the sound differences between the earlier Hammonds and the go-to -3 era organs. I've heard a number of reports that organs like the CV have a thicker sound than that of say, the B-3. Some folks even claim to prefer the earlier models sound wise. What are the opinions of you who have played them?

Operation wise, there is no split vibrato but rather global vibrato/chorus. Of course, no percussion. The earlier models had a different cut on the tone wheels so a slightly different sound. Also, depending on age, some had the 16" drawbar go all the way down rather than foldover on the lowest octave.

Remember that older Hammonds with paper caps on the generator sound darker than later models. Some later models had mylar caps which hold their value longer. Even comparing older paper caps to more recent paper caps there is a difference due to the paper caps changing values so much over the years. This causes the higher frequency tone filters to get so out of tolerance that there is a loss of tone volume. Re-capping an older generator will make it brighter.

This re-capping is an on-going debate. Some say to re-cap and have your Hammond sound like it was intended when new. Others say the sound mellows with age and they like it so much they don't want to do anything that might upset their sound.

There is in depth generator info giving model changes with serial numbers etc. at www.bentonelectronics.com/serviceinfo.html under generator service.

I have a DV and can say that it definitely has a bigger, thicker sound than the B-3's that I've played. It doesn't have the "foldback" on the sub-fundamental so the lowest octave is a real beast! Huge sound!

Well, that's what I was thinking. Anyone else have an impression?

A friend of mine has a CV that I have played. In the same room he has an A105/Leslie 251 rig. The CV is very thick and rich sounding while retaining a very clear Hammond tone. He sold his B3/122/PR40 when he got the CV and plays the CV through a PR20! I liked the sound and would consider owning one if I didn't have the RT3 rig if for no other reason than the bass goes all the way down. It would have been even better Leslied up. The C cabinets are incredible. The wood and finish are much nicer than later models, very magestic looking instrument. I am a huge fan of the C cab anyway when it comes to looks. Percussion can always be added if you have to have it (I do).

my CV does not go all the way down..the 16' drawbar is folded back from tenor C down.....I've got a BA and it does not "fold back"..but my CV definately does fold back....however....the CV does produce a really awesome sound..not sure if it is the age of the componants or what but it is quite a glorious sounding Hammond.

Good to hear. I'm seriously considering looking for a CV as my go-to Hammond. Right now the RT-2 is it and I have no desire to add percussion to it. That's what the (modified) E-311 is for! I wish there was a CV equivalent with the AGO spec pedal and a pedal solo unit. Does the original RT model apply?

John, are there any recordings of your CV through a Hammond cab? If so, I'd love to hear them! I really love the straight cab sound. People rely on Leslies too much.

                    Re: CV / BV Question

regards, the CV and a Hammond cab.....I'll do some recordings on it with just a DR20......it has a pr20 but for some reason that cabinet never did work correctly..but the Dr20 works fine so I'll hook it up to the CV and do some "straight" recordings on it......
                    .

agreed a Leslie so radically changes how a Hammond sounds it would be interesting to get it recorded "straight" in comparison...give me a few weeks and i'll get them posted, and post back here when I do. :)
