• Tube socket cleaning

Does anyone have any suggestions for a commonly found object that would be a good tool for cleaning tube sockets?

I've used the tubes to do the job by pulling them out and re-installing a few times while spraying with contact cleaner, but sometimes this ruins the sockets by un-seating the contacts.

    thanks

      JB3,

Don't wiggle the tube if at all possible. The pins themselves will enlarge the sockets and sometime prevent a good connection. I have a few dental picks that I picked up at a swap meet and use a long straight pick for tube sockets to tighten the connectors. I have added shrink tubing tothe handlesfor insulation.

To do it properly you must access the socket from the bottom of the chassis. I also use a pick that I have roughed up a bit with some sand paper on extremely dirty sockets (mouse piss, beer spills, cola etc). a torch tip cleaner will also work and they come in assorted sizes.

Ground the filter caps before doing anything inside the chassis or sticking a metal object in a tube socket! Make sure the organ (or other amp) is unplugged.

      Best,
