• Question for the experts

Hi guys, this is the scenario.

I'm putting my M111 and Leslie 147 on storage tomorrow. (moving out of state)

I oiled it but made a big mistake : over oiled the funnel on top of the scanner vibrato. I tried to take as much oil as I could with a paper towel without taking apart the generator cover; just unscrewed the 6 black front screws, lifted the cover, tried to reach to the sponge container and dried as much as I could. (all my tools are already packed)

I also locked the generator via inverting the bolts, etc. (for the moving)

After all this, I turned it on and I noticed a different sound while starting, more like a "thud" and the I have this constant low end humming that I never heard before. I do remember turning it on while the cover was just sitting on top of the generator chassis and heard that hum; I put some hand pressure on different points of the cover (without the 6 front black screws) and the hum/sound changed depending on what part of it I was pushing:

Is the um because the generator is locked and not "floating"?

    Thanks a lot.

I would have thought this problem is just related to the locking down of the generator. If you have over oiled the scanner vibrato the problem would be related just to that.

    Good luck.

Do you think it would compromise the generator if I play it a little bit tonight? (generator locked)

Don't know when I will be able to play it again...

        No

Give it a good seeing to! These old girls need to be played as much as poss to keep them going. You just will have the extra hum due to locking down the TG thats all.

My scanner started squeaking the other day on my recently aquired T and I gave it four years worth of oiling on the funnel nearest the scanner and held her up in the air for 10 mins whilst running....haven't heard so much as a pip since! Thses things are bomb proof. Just make sure you give it a good play when it comes out of storage.

        Cheers

It was good but it was on my search for the Hammond Holy Grail, I paid £1500 for the Yamaha Workstation as soon as it came out last year for the 'Virtual' tone bar Hammond soundbut it still wasn't good enough. Now I have my two tonewheel organs I just use the Yamaha for electric and grand pianos. I will be putting it through my new leslie speaker next time I play Echoes though.

I used to have the X5D sitting on top of a Korg CX-3 (V 2.0) and to me (I was in a Santana tribute band then) it was perfect. Made a lot of patches to make them sound like Chester Thompson Yamaha SY99 on Sacred Fire Live.

yeah, I think you're just hearing the vibration through the cabinet with the TWG locked.

I keep my A100 where we gig and practice. It's on a roller stand so I can move it into lockup and back. So I just keep the TWG locked down. When you're up to volume, you never notice that hum. Goff sells a rubber mount kit I think. I never bothered.
