I bought a 21h leslie and converted it to a 147 (all but the stock V-20 driver). Everything sounds great except that it just wont get that high frequency "scream". Could this be because of the old driver (which is in excellent shape)? Will the V-21 make a difference at all? Any tips about volume and preamp settings with a C-3?

Re: V-20 vs. V-21 is there a difference?
I tried that for about 10 seconds and I think if i do that again I'll get evicted!! good distortion but how can I get good tone at lower volume? I usually open the trimmer all the way and set the leslie amp really low. This produces a small amount of distortion but it still doesn't sound like the yes album! How were they getting that screaming distortion? My buddie's got a 145 and it makes "the scream" and I believe it might be from the driver design. I think 21h's had a slightly different horn speaker than the later generation leslies. Whatever though. What i got sounds great, I just want to get to the bottom of the whole distorted leslie thing!

The Hammond preamp cannot be over driven. The adjustment can make it louder, but it will not overdrive. Guitar amps are designed to be able to overdrive with level control. The 145/147 has a more sensitive input than the 122 type allowing greater input overdrive with smaller signals. That said, the output stage of a 145/147 is also different than a 22H/122 type. It in fact has more high frequency response. Did you change the output section when you did the conversion?

As for recordings, they often just turned the leslie up until it distorted and recorded it. Unfortunately, you can't do that in a quiet neighborhood.
