Hi All,

I'm new hear and apologize if I seem to ask dumb questions....please bear with me.

I have an opportunity to buy a Leslie 125 for $50. I know this is not the most desireable Leslie, but for practising at home I think it'll do the job. I'm also looking at getting the Roland VK-7 for practising at home and using for casual events (church based). I want to ultimately pair the 2 up but I know that there has to be a conversion done somewhere from 11 pin to 6 pin. I know there's the 1147 kit which runs about $230-$280 online. I'd like to entertain another option and hope that the wise here can direct me. I've seen a combo preamp that I can get for less than the 1147 kit and would allow me more flexibility when and if I resell the leslie. I don't like switching the Leslie with a foot switch so here go my questions....

    1. Is it easy to re-wire a Leslie half moon tremolo/chorale switch in place of a foot switch? (I have some electronics background but need to verify with the guru's)

    2. Will a tremolo on/off switch act the same way a tremolo/chorale switch does? ie, will it control a slow/fast speed on the leslie or is it exclusively on/off?

    3. It is a better way to go with the combo preamp vs the 1147 kit for flexibility? (Understanding that I'd take a 1/4" out from the Roland VK-7 vs the 11 pin Leslie out)

    4. Are there other cheap alternatives to the Leslie switch? I've heard of using a simple light switch???? Will this work? What would be involved as far as wiring this type of switch up?

    Thanks in advance guys!

    1) This should be fairly simple.

    2) Slow (chorale) is always on, the switch only sends a signal to a relay that controls the high speed (tremolo). Two wires is all you need.

    3) If the 1147 is anything like the 1122 stick with the combo pre-amp, the kit is outrageously overpriced, there are about 5 cents worth of parts, not particularly well constructed. I also can't see how UL would be very happy with it either. You would have to mount it inside the leslie, as I don't know where it would go in the VK7.

    4) A simple on-off light switch (SPST) would work but would need to be mounted in a box. A better choice might be a smaller toggle switch or a push on off like the pre-amp, but why not stay with the foot switch? Its not like a VK7 requires feet for anything :-)

The combo preamp would be best IMO, much better than a home brew kit. You really don't want to mount that stuff on the VK-7 I would think. Also make sure the Leslie 25 is the one with an amp in it! They made them both ways! $50 is a great price to a 25 amp or not.

the light switch works in a pinch. I've used one while waiting to get a 1/2 moon. Get a brown 'Decora' style with plate, put it in a small wood box, looks old.

If you watch Ebay, you can sometimes score the real deal pretty cheap. Then just Velcro it to the keyboard.

Even on my C3 I far prefer the footswitch on my TrekII to having to take my hands off the keyboard.
