I've recently been having this problem with starting my organ (especially when it's cold). The start motor operates well but as soon as I switch on the synchronous it's been making this rattle and crapping out. I can always get it to start but lately it's been getting harder. Also, the noise. ??????? It's sort of a mellow/rapid knocking, sounds like a woodpecker on tweek!

Sounds like one of your coupling springs broke. </p>

Re: B3 hard to start/rattle from run motor
I was getting this problem on my M, but in my case I had to adjust the generator's suspension springs a little higher on the run motor's side; theyappeared to havesagged some over the years. Evidently with the generator being crooked, that slight amount of lateralplay in the u-joint was shifting in towards the run motor, and pushing the motor's shaft inwards causing some friction between the hub and the bearing edge, giving me that "woodpecker on speed" effect. After adjusting it went away. I only figured it out by accidentally nudging the u-joint whilethe organwas running, I was ready to swap another motor in there beforehand.
