Has anyone heard of a Leslie 31M. It seems to be similar to a chopped Tall boy. I would like to find out if would be a good unit for a Hammond (M3)</P>

    Thx</P>

As far as I'm aware, there's no such animal. The three varieties of 31 were: 31A, 31H, and 31W. All of these were tall boys, 5' high I believe. So you're probably looking at someone misreading the ID tag - understandable given that it's probably 60 years old and potentially tarnished by now. If it's less than 60" tall, you probably are indeed looking at a chop - again understandable that someone would want to do this if they were trying to gig the Leslie. Otherwise it could be a 21H, which is shorter (41"); but of course that would assume the seller is misreading 2 of the 3 characters. It happens though - my Wurlitzer 200A electric piano was advertised as a "Werelitzer organ model 2004"!</P>

If it's really a tallboy, it doesn't seem like the ideal Leslie for an M3. The forte of the tall cabinets is the increased bass response, whereas the M3 only has that one-note-shy-of-an-octave, crappy-sounding set of short pedals. Most people would look for a shorter cabinet - even shorter than the 21H. Something like a 25, 120, 125, or 130; or if you have more money to throw around, a 45, 145 or 245. Anyway good luck with it. Can you post an image of it and the serial plate? That would be a big help in assisting you.</p>

If it is a 31W it would be easy to hook up (like a 147)and it would really help your M3 sound great since it needs help on the low end. I have all kinds of Hammonds and Leslies and enjoy experimenting with different combinations. Try it, you'll like it!

      Hammonds: A; AB; B3; D; E; 6-M3's; 2-A100; T582C.
      Leslies: 3-31H; 21H, 22H, 4-44W; 46W; 25; 47; 45; 125; 50C; 51; 55C; 2-120; 122; 122A; 145; 147; 245; 770; 825; 2-102; 2-103; 300.
Wicks 2/5 pipe organ; Yamaha upright; Kurzweil Micro Piano & Micro B with M-Audio Oxygen 61; Yamaha DGX520; Wurlitzer 4100 (it came with a Leslie!). Peavey KB100 keyboard amp. Peavey Bass Guitar. Yes, I have A. D. (acquisition disorder) and don't want it cured.
