Hi - does anyone know anything about this model? Considering picking one up from Craig's List for $100. Supposed to be solid state but with a TWG and a built in 2-speed Leslie, late '70's vintage. I thought Hammond went to LSI tone generation in the '70's on their spinets? Curious. If you have any info please let me know. Thanks - Charlie Mac

Re: Hammond N456A
N100, 200, and 300 were not terribly successful NON-tone wheel generator spinets from the early '70's. Unless you prefer the somewhat thin tone quality of these, and also from a reliability standpoint, I would leave these alone.

It is possible that the numbers are screwwed up in some way, because in the 10 years I was selling Hammonds during that time, I don't recall ever seeing model numbers like this. Take another look, and possibly it is a T-546A, which as I recall would be a T-500 tonewheel spinet in a decorator cabinet of some sort.
Larry K

Re: Hammond N456A
Final model in the N series is the N300. There's just a chance that someone may be describing the N300's LSI replacement - the Phoenix - as an N400. It can't be late 70's if it's either, as they were both gone by 1975.

Could do with a photo to confirm, but in any case that $100 figure is a joke. $20-30 is more like it, if it's 100% working.

I don't know how to post a pic but here is a link to the ad:

Looks like from the pic that it has drawbars, but is that indicative of a TWG? Thanks - Charlie Mac

Re: Hammond N456A
This is a T-500, last of the tonewheel spinets, transistorized amp. I forget the furniture designations, but it might be Mediterranean Oak, T-595.

I always thought these were rather nice.
Larry K

Re: Hammond N456A
My first organ was a T202 and I still keep her despite the later aquisitions (see below) There is a lot of support here and on the web to tweak these to sound more dirty and B3 like. Brendon and I have just finished doing these mods to our T series and I have just emailed him to come over here and look at this thread

$100 is fine. Andyg thought you were referring to an N series at the time! ($0.00)

Check out captain foldback:http://www.captain-foldback.com/ He's recently changed his page coding, so I can't give you a direct link to the T series page. On the bar at the bottom, click on Hammonds, then the T-series box when it comes on the screen.

And be sure to Bookmark Carsten Meyer's site: http://www.keyboardpartner.de/hammon...ifications.htm

Re: Hammond N456A
Well, I checked it out and the organ (which turned out to be a T-546A) didn't turn out to be a good fit for me, so I passed it by. Thanks to all who helped with good info and advice. I've decided to go a different route and buy a "Leslie" speaker kt. You can check it out at www.songworks.com, "rotary wave speaker." Small and compact, but it will work with my M-111 without a kit, and I can use one of my 4 or 5 guitar amps I have laying around, to drive it. I'll let you know how it turns out (I have a friend lined up to help me put it together, since I am not very handy at that type of thing). Charlie Mac

Re: Hammond N456A
Looks like a good price on the kit, and a good bunch of big names using it (on guitar. Even Jan Akkerman!) I wonder what it'll be like on the M? The M's a great organ anyhow.

It'll befantasticto hear it, definitely post up your results! Pictures and recordings would be brilliant.

Now, does that mean there's a T-500 still going for sale? What sort of location is it?

There was a recent posting here of a chap wanting a T-500. Never know, he might be in the right area to look it up.

Here in New Zealand there's a T-200 going for sale, I'll contact the buyer once its all done and offer him a membership here!

Cheers,

Re: Hammond N456A
Yeah, I talked to the guy yesterday - nice fellow; they just reduced the price from $400USD. He is also interested in hearing what a Hammond sounds like through it; apparently not a whole lot of folks with Hammonds use the speaker. I'm also going to install a small 12 watt amp in the bottom of the cab so that I won't have to use an external amp for lower volume practice.

I checked the listing today and the organ is still for sale - located in Rogers, MN,which is a NW suburb of Mpls, MN, about 50 mi from my house. Hope someone on the forum can use it. Thanks - Charlie Mac
