• V21 Driver fix/replacement

Amazing. I think I know what "wasp in glass" is supposed to
sound like. Please correct me if i'm wrong but I think i've broken my
leslie tonight. This is not the speaker from the M3/145 thread.

I had floyd in my head the whole day, tonight it just came out.

It sounds like a no-brainer to me and i've never heard a dead horn before this. If I fix the driver via re-alignment will
another failure be imminent if I run this setup again at stage volume? I want to
gig with this leslie when given the chance. Is it well worth buying a
new driver? Has anyone ever installed the reproduction driver diaphragm?

I've had the diaphram in and out of mine. They have to be realigned every time they have been apart as the circular down =stand on the back has to fit in that pesky groove. An warped driver should be visible to the eye. TWG hospital sell the replacement diaphram and a shim kit to move the diaphram away from the magnet if required.I didn't find the job difficult just a pain in the butt! For heavy duty stage work there is a replacement complete driver that Mark at Retrokeys recommended at a US company called BT Productions but lately his site has been down.

Yes it looks like the site has been overhauled.

What did you think of the phenolic driver? Mark Ashfield of The Getup and Retrokeys (who sold me the RT3) uses one in his Leslie and he showed it to James Taylor (the english jazz funk one) and he has put one in his Leslie as well.

        Cheers

          Holy crap! I fixed it!

I took it apart, but beyond that I don't know what else i did. I scraped a small swiss army knife inside the voice coil groove, blew out some dust...and got it back together on my first try. I used a bogen amp with selectable output and played some music through the driver. All the screws locked in without causing any buzz to come back. Now I am just worried about the noise coming back during a gig.

I also noticed this little brown piece of felt that sits in the middle of the magnet. It was a bit loose and I was able to remove it very easily with tweezers. I placed it back in the hole and it seems to sit snug, but with no real re-enforcement. What is the purpose of that felt, and does it undergo much stress during the normal operation of the driver which would knock it out of place?

Dave, the replacement driver looks nice and the website definitely "sells" it to the reader but I can't find any testimonials. Really though - what is it other then a new metal chassis, magnet and phenolic diaphragm / voice coil? If I am correct, then shouldn't I technically be able to get the same results from swapping my voice coil for new? Reliability and gig-worthy speakers also come into play...a 75W driver seems like a nice upgrade while I keep the v-21 in a box for future living room use...Ahh the decisions.

If you are going to gig with a driver you want the Atlas PD-60. Rick has them on his website tonewheel general hospital. I have personally let loose on this driver and it just cranks the volume with no problems at all. I tried the BT driver and sent it back. I did not like the mids it puts out. The Atlas PD-60 is going to be very loud in your Leslie. Louder then the stock V21. I have put in an extra piece of cotton into the horn to tone down the PD60 to try to make it sound sweet like the V21. Its not as sweet sounding as the V21 but it is very reliable. If you really want the best driver in your Leslie go for the JBL 2482 vintage mid range driver. It has a 4" voice coil oppossed to the 2" coil in all the others drivers I mentioned yet has the sweet top end of the V21. I would go for the JBL 2482.

Do you remember that thread on Hammondzoneback in Decemberabout this where someone threw theirs away and Kon Zissis explained what it was for (I can't remember) and a long thread ensued with people changing theirs. It is to do with removing a bit of harshness I think.
