I just replaced the 12au7 "groove tube" in my 147 amp with a tung sol type. Wow! Such a difference(little less volume though). I've heard that groove tubes are trash and I'd be willing to say that they are after that change. Also, i'm using svetlana 6550's. Any opinions on these? How are the tung sol's in contrast?

Re: groove tubes in leslie amps?
Tubes vary between individual ones. Only thing is to check them on a checker and then on a curve tracer to look for non-linearities.

Some circuit designs do not accomodate variations in ubes very well.

Russia has been building tubes for a long while and probably are the only real manufacturers of some now. Groove I classify right along with Bose and Monster cables as hype and high priced...

[/quote]I agree. I might add that my personal success rate with Sovetek tubes has been about 50% failure in guitar amps. Much harder service than Organs but still significant I think. The only tube manufacturer with a western style QC commitment and program of continual improvement in my opinion (important point that "my opinion") is JJ in Czechoslovakia.

I don'tknow about the Russian tubes, but will second the comment on the JJs. They seem to be built to a high standard and have performed very well for me in both Hammond and Leslie power amplifiers.1937 Model E
