  • Going rate for an A-100

Hi Everyone, I know that different areas affect prices based on demand. I am in the midde of Michigan and from what I have seen it is not exactly a hotbed of demand for Hammonds. A guy has a '64 A-100 in excellent shape and says everything works but nothing has been done to refurb anything, all orig. He wants $1500. I think that's high for around here. I want to make him an offer but don't want to lowball him so bad he says to get bent. What is the going rate? I had one tech here in MI tell me you could buy a running A100 for $750 easy but he was saying that I think because he wanted to buy them for that priceand drop them in B3 cabs? What should I offer the guy?

I would check ebay closed auctions for comparables. From what I've seen around $1200.00 is about right based on your criteria.
    Hammonds: A; AB; B3; D; E; 6-M3's; 2-A100; T582C.
    Leslies: 3-31H; 21H, 22H, 4-44W; 46W; 25; 47; 45; 125; 50C; 51; 55C; 2-120; 122; 122A; 145; 147; 245; 770; 825; 2-102; 2-103; 300.
Wicks 2/5 pipe organ; Yamaha upright; Kurzweil Micro Piano & Micro B with M-Audio Oxygen 61; Yamaha DGX520; Wurlitzer 4100 (it came with a Leslie!). Peavey KB100 keyboard amp. Peavey Bass Guitar. Yes, I have A. D. (acquisition disorder) and don't want it cured.

Re: Going rate for an A-100

This is kind of a tough one. Certainly based on Ebay TA is right on target at around $1200 average. But with that said, there are much better deals to be had. Someone just recently posted about picking up an A100 for $175; I was fortunate enough to get mine for free. I also just missed another free one about a year ago, and have seen two others advertised for free in the last year (NE region.) Believe it or not, people do still give these away - if you look long and carefully enough, you can get a great deal.</P>

But with that said, it kind of depends on how long you're willing to wait. If you're not in a big hurry to get a console, consider picking up the next free or very cheap T100, L100, or if you're lucky, M100 or M3 that comes along. This is what I did - picked up a $50 M3 to bang around on while I waited for a deal on a console... just less than a year later the free A100 came along.</P>

If on the other hand you just gotta have a 3-series tonewheel like the A100 right now, you might offer the guy $1000 and see what he says. Again it all depends on how anxious you are to get one. </P>

But here are some other potential bargains on tonewheel consoles, in general:</P>

      - model CV. For some reason there seem to be a LOT of these around, I guess Hammond must've sold a ton of them. And since they have two non-B3 strikes against them (church cabinet, plus no split vibrato or percussion... ok I guess that's three!), they don't seem to command the super-high prices.</P>

      - models E100 or R100. These are lesser instruments than the A100, with some solid-state technology creeping in, and some differences in features (e.g. percussion) -- but they're 61/61/25 consoles, and they're all tonewheel.</P>

      - model RT2. If you can manage the additional weight (and bulk!), and more importantly you don't mind the AGO pedals (32 as opposed to 25), you can sometimes get a deal on one of these. I saw one sell on Ebay a couple years ago for $57.50 - with an HR40 tone cab!</P>

      - model A102. A lot of guys seem to have an aversion to the "French Provincial" cabinet (curvy legs) on this model, so they often go for less than the standard A100 cabinet. I've seen them in the range of $200 - $500 around here from time to time. Make no mistake, it's the same guts as a B3 and can kick a corresponding amount ofbooty! --Just looks a little girly for some guys' tastes.</P>

Now a Leslie is another matter entirely... but hopefully that will give you some idea of what the parameters are. Again, this is based on the NE, but I would think in MI you could do comparatively quite well. Good luck!</P>
