• Can anyone explain the percussion tabs on the L 111?

Hello again; In learning to play my L 111, and being new to this , with very little music background, could anyone explain the percussion tabs on this organ to me. I think of percussion as drums. Obviously there is no drums on an organ. I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I would like to fully understand this section of my organ. Thanks in advance, and as always God Bless all of you. Hi Chaplain!

These add a more percussive sound to the key's attack, though it gets drowned out when there are a lot of drawbars pulled out. It sort of adds a "ping" sound, either in what's called the 2nd or 3rd Harmonic, which isthe same, I think as the 4' drawbar and the 2 2/3' drawbar.

    Fun eh?

Good Morning Brendon; Does this percussion effect work on the upper and lower keyboards or foot pedals, or all of them. Also why is there only one drawbar for the footpedals and no tabs for them? Sorry for all the questions, but I realy am greatful for you sharing your knowledge with me. As always God Bless Curley

        G'day again!

It's 11pm Wednesday here in New Zealand. I'll have to hand you over to someone in the UK shortly!

The percussion only works on the top manual. I'm not wholly familiar with the L, but if its like my T, it only gives the option of running either the 8' or 16' tones on the pedal at one time, which is a shame. I think it's a design issue, because the pedal tones are generated in a slightly different way from the big consoles. They have what are called "complex waveforms" for the pedals and have separate tonewheels for them. This means they have a bigger sound on the pedals and can have two drawbars for the pedals, which is nice.

There are no tabs for the pedals because the tabs are presets of different drawbar configurations. Even on the consoles (Except for the RT3) they don't have pedal presets because there are only limited combinations on pedal and are relatively easy tochange by hand.

On the consoles they have two sets of drawbars for each manual. It becomes even more confusing in that the percussion also only works with one of the sets of drawbars, not both.

I shall see you at the other end of the day!

        Be blessed,

          On the L,

The percussion diverts all the tones sent through the 2nd last drawbar (1 1/3' ?) on the upper manual to the percussion amp, where the hammond percussion sound is produced.

To become most familiar with all the controlls for this feature, start by pushing in all the upper drawbars so that no tone can be heard (upper drawbar tab must be depressed). Next, flip on the 2nd harmonic tab and play around with the sound. The 2nd harmonic sounds the unison of the note you play on the keyboard (that is, A will be A, C will be C, etc..) while the 3rd harmonic sounds a 5th above any note you play (ie. playing C will sound a G).

On this organ you can play both 2nd and 3rd but I don't find it very useful. The attack and decay of the percussion can be changed with the tabs, and in the rear of the organ you can adjust a trim pot to adust the cut off (decay).

Notice when the percussion is on (only active if the drawbar preset is activated, it won't work when the presets are used) the 2nd last drawbar will not sound if you pull it out. All the other drawbars will work.

If you pull out the first 3 drawbars and use 3rd harmonic percussion you will get a classic jazz organ sound. 2nd harmonic gives a very Allman Brothers type sound.

Play song 18, You don't love me

Almost anything by Jimmy smith will have 3rd perc

Now you know the details, go play around with it!

Blessed is he with a Hammond.

I really thank the both of you from the bottom of my heart for being so patient with me. I really am very new to all of this. Now here is another question. When you say pull out the first 3 drawbars, is this on the upper or lower drawbars, and do I start right to left or left to right. Thanks for all of your help in explaining all of thhis to me and May you both be blessed for your kindness. Chaplain Curley

If your L is early, it won't have the pitches on the drawbars, so here goes, from left to right.

              Lower - 7 drawbars. 8', 4', 2 2/3', 2', 1 3/5',1 1/3' and 1'

              Pedal - 16' drawbar.

              Upper - 9 drawbars. 16', 5 1/3', then the same 7 as the Lower.

By 'first 3 drawbars' he meant Upper, ie 16', 5 1/3' and 8'.

              Hope this assists

Great question! I have the same question & have a Conn 550. Just like you I have never had musical training but have been teaching myself to play the organ. It's been 4 1/2 yrs now. Can't wait for your answers! Chris

Er, the Conn 550 doesn't have drawbars or the same percussion tabs, so what is your question, Chris? Fire away with anything you want to know and we'll help.
