• Toubleshooting Hammond CV and Leslie 205

This forum has been a goldmine for helping me with other organ related problems, however I have not been able find enough information on my current project so I am posting for the first time. I recently purchased a Hammond CV and Leslie 205. The leslie is clearly not ideal, being a four channel leslie with roto sonic drums, butgiven myskill and lack $$$ it should be passable. When I purchased the organ and leslieit was playable, it didn't sound good, too much distortion when turned to full volume (sometimes sounding like a boiler room). I had a tech take a look at it a few weeks ago. He wasable to turn down the output(?) on the leslie amplifier, as well as replace abrokenmercotac and setup theleslie motor so that both drum motors are running off the same signal (previously the bottom motor continually run at fast). However, not five minutes after he left the organ stopped working ... completely. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Needless tosay I'm a little disappointed. I guess it goes to show that if want something done right you have to do it yourself.

Currently, the leslie amplifier lights up when I turn the organ on, the roto sonic drums are working and canbe turned from fast to slow. But there is no signal coming out of the speakers, I am not even getting any resistance coming out the speakers when keys arepushed down.

I havegone over theconnections in the leslie and they all appear to be in place. I have also gotten all of the tubes in both theleslie and the organ pre amp tested (which appear to be in good shape). I have also had a retired tech take a look at the leslie amplifer; he said it looked to be ok.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this project? Is there a way to test to see if the problem is on the organ side or the leslie side- (I tried to run a 1\4 inchfrom the blackpin of the 9 pin cable into a guitar ampand got aloud noise coming out, but it didn't sound like my organ) Is there an order for troubleshooting this problem? This there a way to test the crossover and speakers to see if that's where the problem this?

Thanks for reading my post, all questions, comments and recommendations are welcome. I can also post some pictures if that would help. Thanks for your time.

Re: Toubleshooting Hammond CV and Leslie 205

Not knowing what the tech did is part of the problem and will make troubleshooting harder. To isolate, unplug the Leslie cable at the organ. Run a shielded guitar cable from one of the G terminals on the organ preamp and a chassis ground to your guitar amp. If it plays then your Leslie is the problem, which I suspect anyway. Mercotacs can come off and lose signal but if you have two then I doubt that is the problem for one should still be working. Important: Does your CV have it's own power supply (B+) or is it provided by the Leslie? If by the Leslie, you'll have to leave the Leslie & cable plugged into the organ. You can take whatever wires are attached to the GG terminals of the organ preamp off temporarily to keep a signal out of the Leslie cable. I believe your amp is the standard 4 channel which I have a couple of. Each channel has it's own volume control (a small, vertical brass rod). I'm not familiar with that model 205 but the schematic on the internet seems to be like a 610 or 101 type. If so, it will have 7189 tubes. That amp is not designed to supply the organ with B+ but it could if modified. Not the best for an older Hammond. Look on your Leslie amp for the number. If you tried a signal from a black wire, it will be helpful to us to know which pin number that is, although I suspect the whole thing has been changed from stock. There had to be mods on the Leslie amp to work at all. It would help if you'll post pictures of the organ preamp and Leslie amp, preferably connections on the underside. Report back what you find. The rest of the cavalry is on the way!
