  • Organless in Texas

    Hey all,
For the first time since age 14 I am without an organ. My Gulbransen (non-working) is on CL for free. Two inquires so far, one a scammer and the other hasn't gotten back with me.

Before I continue with this line of thinking, I have a few questions.

Can I use a keyboard like a Roland XR700 or similar and my Roland KC100 as a start for my "new" organ? I already own the amp. I guess I have to have one with midi inputs for a lower manual and one for pedal. I've seen these keyboards in the Guitar Center used gear section.

I know someone who can take the Gulbransen pedalboard and convert it to midi to attach to something like an XR700. Then I'd get a lower manual and build a stand for it all that I could easily get into my upstairs bedroom. I've seen pictures of such things online.

Will such an idea work? I've been looking at organs online but its like looking for a used car with specific options or trim level. The local selection is miserable as the number for sale decreases.

I'm thinking this may be a better way to go instead of wasting money on a used organ that might not work after I get it home.

    Opinions?

    Thanks,

    Mark

It's all possible, but a heck of a lot of hassle and will never play like a dedicated organ.

I'd have thought that the bigger cities in Texas would have had a glut of used organs to choose from, but I have no idea where Terrell is in the Lone Star state! If you can find some 'possibles' we can help you sort the wheat from the chaff. And with prices as low as they are, if you get something that works well for almost nothing and it only lasts a couple of years, you'll have got your money's worth and can 'upgrade' again. Hassle when it happens, sure, but probably less hassle than putting together a home-brew affair.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
