  • Requesting info on this CONN

    Hello again,
I've been curious about CONN organs for a while and found this one for free near me. Does anyone know which model it is? Didn't conn use TIO circuits in some of their organs? Is this one of the lucky ones? How is the sound? Internal leslie?

I know most of the conn organs are pretty shallow which would be a good thing, as the door to my music room is only 29 3/4" deep.

That looks like one of the 600 series models, perhaps a 628 or 640 or something. Somewhat "theater-ish" in tone and short on classical sounds. As with all the old Conn models (prior to the use of multiplexing), there are no authentic couplers, no mixtures, no celestes. Basically a very good unit flute that is used on both manuals and as the 8' in the pedals, but the rest of it will be direct-keyed "pulse" voices which are prone to having serious key contact problems often leading to dead notes all over the place.

If this were a model 720 or 721, or the later 714 or 716, you would at least have a good unit principal to go with the flutes. But the 600 series had only the poor direct-keyed pulse voices to contrast with the flutes. So you may not find it very satisfying, even if free.

But even the smaller and limited Conns like this one do have independent oscillators for each pitch, so there is a great ensemble sound with plenty of nice chorusing and subtle beating. If it's in really good condition and the keying rods and contacts are not too worn out, it might actually be enjoyable as a temporary organ at least.

628 Rhapsody, vintage early 70s. Basic, but good sound as John noted. Straightforward to maintain.
