  • Conn 552 theaterette

Have a Conn Theatrette 552 that has just started making cracking noises through speakers when playing the pedals. Any Advice would be welcome on this.

Could be a lot of things , try speaker connections first, may be the bass notes are vibrating loose connections. Then there is the amplifier train, there are two of them , one for the pulse tones and the other for the sinewave generation (Tibia). There is a preamp in the top of the console and the power amps are in the bottom of the console, near the floor. Having said all this it could be connections in other parts of the instrument, get a service manual. These organs were relatively easy to work on rather than the digital multiplexed variety that came next, you needed to know far more and understand digital electronics thoroughly for them, eg: 553,554,644,652,653 and others . All model 552 theatrette organs just used discrete transistors and a sprinkling of TTL 74XX series digital IC's and CMOS rhythm pattern chip in the rhythm generator.

I would check the speakers first. My Baldwin MCX-2100 was making a horrible rattle. When I pulled the back off to have a look, I saw that the 10" speakers had disintegrated badly. I also discovered a 1/4" output jack on the underside of the console. I plugged in a Roland keyboard amp and WOW, what a difference! I now have 2 new speakers on order. It will be an easy and inexpensive (less than $80) fix. Maybe that's all your problem is. BTW - I still need the owners manual for the MCX-2100. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks...
