• Galanti/Napoli Duo 1/4 jack broken

    hello

i have rescued a galanti from landfill. looks to be thirty year old. it has two jacks, one "cassette", the other "headphone". the headphone jack has disassembled and i don't know how to repair and i think the fault is the cause of a constant hum from the speaker. the jack has three tags: a pair of green wires is soldered to one tag together with the leg of a uf 2200 capacitor?. the next tag has a single blue wire that makes contact via a spring "j" to the first tag and pushing in a jackplug, breaks the contact. finally, a pair of black wires and a leg of a 48 ohm resistor? is attached to the third tag.

i can supply photos if useful.

    thanks

    Hi Artie

Make that nearer 40 years old! A constant hum from the speaker is often a sign of smoothing capacitors failing in the power supply. These MUST be replaced if faulty. If you're not confident about fault finding here - and remember that this is where some lethal voltages exist - then take it back to the tip. It is not worth spending any money on at all. Galanti organs from the late 60's and very early 70's were pretty awful and not very reliable either. If you want an organ, you'll be able find something much better for peanuts or for free.

Sorry to pour a little cold water on your enthusiasm for getting it going, but I'd rather be honest with you.

Best of luck whatever you do

The headphone jack likely breaks the connection to the speaker when the headphones are plugged in. I would expect thst the 48 ohm resistor is either switched across the headphones to provide a load closer to that of the speaker.

Trace the wiring to the speaker and see if one of the wires from teh jack connectss to the speaker...

If wiggling the jack makes the hum go away, then the problem could be there... else might be filter caps in the power supply. Scope is the way to analyze that...

Getting schematics for Galanti is near impossible...

        Andy,

thanks for the info. When a couple of the wires (orignally attached to the jack socket) are touched together, the hum disappears, but notes still sound. I need to find a compatible socket . I can't dump the Galanti. I am one of those sad people i.e one who wears a Russian automaticwatch, decries digital cameras and expects England to win the cricket. Still, no complaints about the Grand Slam.

        Regards

Well, you might be in luck if you can get that socket sorted. Sad? Can't dump it? Well, go for it then, but as for winning the cricket, don't get your hopes up. We don't do it that often!

1/4 inch jacks are readily available or suitable substitutes can be found.

            Look in Digikey.com and Mouser.com

It sounds like you have one with switching... Also take piece of typing paper with CRC226 or other contact cleaner and drag between contacts.

Also use pliers to bend and increase pressure of the contacts.

If you could photo the jack, I might be able to find a part number for replacement.
