Re: kawai sr3

    Hi

I didn't have so much input into the smaller SR series as I did on the larger ones, but a lot of my ideasand thoughts were carried over.

The SR3 is a sweet sounding organ, with lovely organ flutes and a good electronic tremolo for them. Strings and solo voices are nice enough but the percussions are not so hot. Rhythms and automatics are good but basic.

It doesn't have the ADD (Additive Digital Dymanics) tone generators we put into the SR5/6/7, but has (if I remember correctly) something called VM (Variable memory) like we had in the synths. The sound quality overall is not quite as high therefore, but I would back those flutes against any others. In fact that flute technology did sneak into other, much more expensive organs!

Any downsides? Key contacts can get dust in them, but all it needs is to raise up the keyboards (about 10 minutes) and give the then exposed contacts a blast with an air can (10 seconds). Then 10 minutes to put the keyboards back down and close up! The user presets store the rhythm patterns with them, which can be annoying. You also won't get a memory card for it for love nor money.

It's great that your daughter is learning organ. Practising on an SR3 after a lesson on an HS5 would be fine.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

OK, I had to look that Viscount up, as I didn't remember it, Now I do, as a student of mine many years ago had one.

I'll be honest and say that the HS5 isn't really that good an organ, it's getting rather old now, and has very few real organ sounds for a start! Maybe it's time for the teacher to upgrade, too! The SR3 would leave it for dust as far as pure organ sounds go! Having said that, the HS series are pretty versatile, if you like menu-driven Yamahas!

The SR3 would indeed be a step up from the Viscount but, if you have a read through some of the threads around here, you'll find that the used organ market is just so dead that you can pick up organs for nothing, or next to nothing. If your girls seriously want you to upgrade, why not have a look around to see what's about, local ads, eBay, Craigslist and so on, and let us know what you find.

We'll be happy to give you straight, honest advice on what's good, bad and indifferent and we usually know what they're all worth too. Also, let us know what type of music they're learning and practising, as that will have a bearing on what you really need.

Thanks again andy. if I understand you right, I will be getting better and more authentic organ voices in the kawai, though I'm not even sure that those are the voices what will be used most.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

On the other hand maybe I'll even be losing on the versatility and auto rhythm section. Btw, I myself ampretty illiterate in music (although I do like listening!).

Regarding your question, the girls practice start out with folk tunes and traditional music on a portable then goes up to classical pieces on the organ, we own a yamaha psr 290 (or something like that) and are currently opting either to upgrade to a yamaha psr s700 or to a better two manual organ (or both...) I was thinking if the music lessons are costing so I might as well have them practice on a decent keyboard.

Btw, the sr3 has only 44 keys per manual and 13 pedals.

By the way, where can one find information on the different viscount models?
