  • Wersi OAX 2.6 with Sample Import Available

Isn't that what all OAX users have been waiting for?

Sounds great, imho. Does Böhm provide sample import?

  • #2
Yes, however it is only suitable for Akai samples (Very few available these days) and STS samples (Again very few available) which could be loaded into OAS.
The only real relevance to the update is the ability to edit factory sounds and save them as user sounds. (The factory sounds are pretty awful since the V2.00 update, so anything to try and improve them is a bonus)
Best way to load extra sounds into OAX is via a VST.

Not into the AMADEUS sound system itself, but if the organ is equipped with the Cloud Studio option, yes! Then it comes with a Steinberg Halion sampler, which can read nearly every modern sample format!

If thats all it does Bill, what is the point of this update. What happened to the sounds in V2?

I am struggling to understand which sounds are awful, as I am finding them absolutely fine. Some sounds are not to my personal taste, just as they weren't on my Verona, my Beta, my Yamahas and other expanders, but that doesn't make them awful. The last update to 2.5 opened up the ability to import Yamaha styles, of which I have added about 550 additional to my Sonic so far and Wersi added c. 1000 extra sounds to work with Yamaha styles. The Sonic has had the ability to run VST's fairly early on to add industry standard samples, and now we have the ability to directly add additional sounds, and edit existing to personal taste. I see this as just the next step in the products evolution, which has been quite extensive over the last 3 years of my Sonic ownership.

          1. V2.00 completely reworked the sounds and while some have improved, the vast majority are far inferior to V1.50. (They really are awful, just have listen to the latest CDs from Claudia Hirschfeld & Robert Bartha, (Available on Spotify, Amazon & Apple) and if they can't make them sound anything but mediocre, (Just listen their CDs before the V2.00 update) what chance has the customer)
          2. there is still no way to store edited drawbar sounds (From the VST Host) so it is no longer possible to make the Sonic sound like any Wersi that has gone before, (If you want Wersi sound and control then your only current option is Bohm)
          3. V2.5 added a great new mic section, however very few use it (Just like they did not use it with OAS) as there are much better 3rd party alternatives, (Including VST versions) thus a complete waste of resources.
          4. The drum editor (Which everybody was expecting to be like the one added to OAS (You could edit everything and load in new wav samples) is a complete joke, as it offers virtually no editing capabilities.
          5. Style conversions are abysmal (You certainly wouldn't want to use them in a song (Some have been posted on YouTube and they are a complete embarrassment) as they are that bad) and you can get far better results (For free) by converting the Genos styles into T2 format and loading them straight in. (Even without editing they don't sound too bad)
          6. In the noughties Akai samples and STS samples were plentiful, and plenty of owners bought sample discs to add extra sounds for their OAS instruments, unfortunately Akai and STS samples (The only samples that Wersi (OAS & now OAX) could load) are now virtually none existent as everybody has moved on to VSTs. (OAS uses who have upgraded to OAX are happy with the latest update as all the sample discs they bought when they had an OAS instrument can now be used on OAX, thus they are no longer stuck with the awful V2.00 sounds)
          7. A simple sound editor was available in OAS in a way shorter time than OAX. (If you look at OAX development, it has been so slow compared to OAS (Which still has way more features than OAX) that it is a complete embarrassment, not helped by Wersi spending resources on things nobody wants)
Wersi are truly (Since V2.00) just a £50 Casio in a posh box with less features.

            Bill,

It sounds like you are having lots of problems with your Sonic, which I am sorry to hear - I am not having the same experience at all. Have you tried reinstalling to ensure it hasn't got its knickers in a twist. I had OAS previously, which I am guessing you had too, with your “abacus” name, and I am not at all unhappy with the functionality of OAX, however my needs may be more basic than yours. Have you contacted Wersi for support?

            Mark.

Mark, I dont believe Bill owns a Sonic. I have asked the question before but he has declined to answer. He is of course entitled to his opinions as we all are, but for someone who doesnt own a Sonic and therefore presumably doesnt play one, I find his comments somewhat unfounded.

When Billy-boy's spitting out the Wersi Kool-Aid, you know they're in trouble.

            HI Markr

I still have my Abacus (As well as my computer based system) and until OAX gives me something to change from OAS (It was looking promising until V2.00 came out) the Abacus will be staying.
I have been interested in Wersi since the late 70s, and have built a number from kits over the years as well as upgrading to the various versions of OAS, and while there were some problems with OAS (Usually due the update not being tested fully) I have always loved the sound and features, however with the advent of V2.00 I now find OAX to be one big enormously massive disappointment that I could not recommend to my worst enemy.
If you are happy with your OAX instrument, that's great, as that is what they are for, however for me, in its present form, (V2.00 on) I would not touch an OAX instrument with a barge pole. (Things may change in the future, but for now, forget it, for all the reasons (And more) in my previous post)

              HI Foxtrotter

I have tried the Sonic many times (Even did a review of it in its early days for Wersiclub UK) I also know exactly how it works and what's in there, (And make sure I keep up to date on what's going on) so not just a random rant from someone that has no experience of the Sonic at all.
As far as I am aware you have never asked what instrument I have, however if I missed it then I apologise.

I agree with Bill the drawbars on OAX are abysmal. Most of the drum patterns I don't like. Out of the box the piano seems harsh. I think the Sonic has potential but its a long wait. What is the point of only being able to import Akai sounds if very few are available. Probably better to stick with OAS and use VSTs on a laptop to modernise it. The trouble with the Wersi guys is that they are to proud to admit they are wrong and just plough on.

I have a lotvof respect for Bill. He knows his stuff and a bigger supporter of Wersi I have not found. If Bill says something isn't right Id be suprised if he was wrong. I recently heard from a very knowledgeable Wersi guy that more stupid things are planned. A shame because I love the Wersi sound but it seems the current incarnation of Wersi don't.
