• I need help with Hauptwerk

I just downloaded the demo-version of Hauptwerk, and set up my MIDI keyboard as a "Redirectable" manual. However- no matter what virtual manual I redirect it to, my keyboard only plays the pedals. How can I set up the MIDI keyboard that I have to play one of the manuals?

     Thanks in advance.

Look in the General Settings menu and choose MIDI Input Paths.

See what channels are being used by which keyboards and then set your keyboard OUTPUT Channel to whichever keyboard you wish to use.

    Hope this helps.

Well that was easy enough! Thanks for the help. I'm really enjoying this program, and have thought and setting up a Hauptwerk system for some time now.

I have condidered building an "organ" out of MIDI components and controllers but I still don't understand MIDI very well. What kind of actual hardware pieces are you using and what kind of computer is supporting it all? I need stuff I can just connect together without soldering or programming computers. Was it expensive to put together? Could you supply a list of what you have? My concern is what kinds of organs will be available when I retire in about 9 years so I might build my own. Perhaps I can begin now piecing it togerther and learning how to use MIDI at the some time. I know such an endeavor will mean perpetual upgrades. My neighbor is getting ready to use MIDItzer and a used Yamaha keyboard so perhaps that will give me an idea how to start. I'm playing mostly classical music so I was considering Hauptwerk.

Any keyboard(s) with MIDI Out can be used. You don't really have to understand much about MIDI. You can go cheap for now and build gradually. There are already many fine organs which have been sampled (classical and theatre). I have 27! (of various sizes). There are already more than one can probably afford to buy. They range in cost from free to ~$1000 and everything in between.

Depends how much you are willing to pay. You can have a fabulously expensive system or a rather simple one. Good headphones are one solution to sound output and speakers are another. For organs you definitely need a subwoofer and/or decent headphones that go down to 32 kHz for the low notes.

You need a reasonably powerful computer with as much memory as you can afford and a decent sound card. But having said that, you can start with with less since Hauptwerk (for instance) lets you compress the wave samples to use less memory and the smaller organs can fit in under 2 GB of RAM with some adjustments which Hauptwerk lets you make easily. The more powerful the computer (new dual or quad core types), the more pipes can be played at once. So to pull out all the stops on a really big organ and play crashing great chords (lots of fun) can tax a less powerful computer. But again, you can get by with smaller organs quite nicely.

If you want a real "organ" you'll have to add a pedal board and probably more than one keyboard. There are companies that supply proper organ type keyboards. And sometimes you can find a Pedal Board on EBay or an organ forum such as this can often make suggestions. The typical MIDI keyboards don't really have an real organ feeling in that there is no resistance when you press a key down. It's fine if that's all you're used to but a real organ type keybaord will feel quite different.

Hope this gives you some idea. Ask more questions if you wish.

If you haven't done so, you should really visit the Hauptwerk forum at http://www.crumhorn-labs.com. Virtually any question you have -- from configurations to costs to sample sets to "how to"s are dealt with there. Folks there have everything from the simplest of systems to outlandishly complex. Lot's of help available to get you started in the right direction, AND get it working.

It's impossible to predict what sample sets will be available in 9 years. But there's a large array of very fine sample sets available now, and many more coming in the next 6-12 months. We're literally in the midst of a cloudburst of sample sets that will be hard to resist.

Besides the samples available at the vendor websites, there is a "concert" venue, where HW users can contribute their own recordings. Playing quality is generally very good, and it provides another window into what HW is capable of. Http://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall

Do we eat -- or do we buy another sample set? THAT is the question :)

I've chosen sample sets. I'm getting thinner by the day.
