I was perusing the US Ebay site today and noticed a Kawai SR6 listed. Starting price is $50 and as usual, it is difficult to say where pricing will end up, but I imagine pretty low as most Kawai's on Ebay don't seem to generate many bids.

It is located north of Columbus, OH, which leads me to a question. Does this model come apart similar to some of the Technics?

The reason I ask is that I might be interested in bidding on this but only if it comes apart so I could stuff it into my Pontiac Vibe as I did my Technics SX-EA5.

No Lloyd, it's just about the most solid spinet you can think of and the only way it comes apart is with a saw. It's also heavy - lots of wood. If you can get it for $50, then hire a van and enjoy the best organ I came up with.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
Thanks for the response, Andy. I knew that you designed this one and were proud of it. I've looked at the SR6/7 before and came close before also.

I just don't know where I would put it if I did get it, and renting a van for a 2 day trip doesn't sound like something I'm looking forward to. But you never know, it has days to go before close and I might get a wild hair... :)

The 6 and 7 are basically the same, but the 7 is full console, rather than spinet. It has a 'variation' button on the pedal orchestral section, which gives it a little more scope down there, and gains the usual console 16' and 5 1/3' drawbars for the lower manual. Other than that, they are the same.

They're from different eras Lloyd. Your EA5 will technically have more accurate voicing, as it's late-ish generation sampled, but the ADD (Additive Digital Dynamics) system in the SR6 gives things a distinctly warmer feel. I'd say (and you know I'm gonna be biased [:D]) that the flutes on the SR6, with its real leslie are smoother than the EA5. The strings are less buzzy, and some of the solo sounds will just sound sweeter. However, the EA5 will win hands down on other solo sounds, and things like piano, some of the guitars, and percussion.

However, where the SR6 really scores is in its ability to blend sounds. Sampled instruments may have ultra-accurate this and that, but when you blend and mix them, they're almost too accurate for their own good! The SR6 blends sounds just like its analogue predecessor, the DX900 (also one of mine) and that's something I did an awful lot of table-thumping (literally!) about back in 1985 and 1986. I may have upset a few friends and colleagues (temporarily, and it was all forgotten over a drink later) but I got my way on almost everything.

The only things I couldn't get were a decent piano and a set of pipe organ sounds. However, I was aware of the up-coming VM technology (sample & synthesis) that would let us produce a low-cost expander. I revoiced that box to match the SR6 perfectly and we sold them by the shedload!

This organ has been relisted after the winning bidder pulled out because they "had things change". So you have another chance to bid on it! The auction has started at 99 cents again. I wish it was in Australia!
I saw that later. He said something about the winning guy backing out and suggesting he sell it to the next guy down at $900. He never said why he didn't do that instead of relisting it.

I won't be bidding, as much as I might like it, as it is a bit far away for me and I'm really looking for another Technics SX-EA5 to have as a spare parts bin. The SR6/7 Kawais interest me because of the comments from Andyg about them, and if I had a bit more room and a lot more willingness to make a roadtrip, I would probably see about getting one of these.

Lloyd, you may not have to acquire a second SX-EA5 as a parts donor. I have found a parts site for Panasonic and it appears (through their specific listing of all EA5 parts) they will sell you anything you need. I have not researched it back much, but do believe that for yours and the GA and FA models a detailed listing of parts is illustrated and probably available. The link is http://www.pstc.panasonic.com/epartr...asp?validate=1 I have not ordered any parts from them but this might help. Bob Johanson
Thanks for the link. I've been there before and while parts and prices would come up, you couldn't actually order the parts. Seemed strange, and I'll try tomorrow as the site won't let you order at all except during certain days/hours.
