    Gulbransen Theatrum



    My son has just asked me to pick up a Gulbransen Theatrum which he has just bought with a Roland Syth on eBay in England. It is only a few miles from me and I know the size will fit in my Ford Galaxy MPV. He is 300 miles away. The things we dad's get asked to do!

    What I do not know is how heavy the organ is ... </p>

    I was searching for an online manual to find If I can easily dissassemble the organ to lift and move or is a multi man maul and haul to move this? </p>

    I saw on this forum quite a few posts about these </p>

    I am unsure of the precise model but it is a 'early 70s organ. ? 3318? Not too sure
    </p>

    Can anyone refer me to methods of moving or a .pdf file of the manaual?</p>

    It's heavy! 250lbs +, IIRC. It does not disassemble at all so multi man job!

    There are two varieties of Theatrum. If your son's is a 3318 it's one of the later ones (with a better drum box but not many other differences) and dates from 1976.</p>

    Can't help you with a source for the manual over here. Maybe some of our Stateside friends can help.</p>

      I did not know Ford had revived the Galaxy name. They used to be large gas drinker sedans over here. Anyway, I did a search to see what you are driving. Getting a Theatrum in there may be possilbe if you remove all the rear seats and lay it on it's backside.We hope your son likes it. I have a Gulbransen Presidentwhich I think is the console model. It has some very nice flute tones and piano.

        I have moved lots of things in this trusty work horse. it will take a full height door on the floor. With the seats removed the floor takes a full 6' x 4' mattress! As a bedI good for car shows!

        The floor size and height will take the Theatrum upright. It is just the weight and how to get it up to floor height I am struggling with. I can take out five of the seven seats, but I am on my own to lift it.</p>

        I have no idea of the stucture under the organ to lift it from below.</p>

          Only problem with having it upright is securing it very tightly so it doesn't topple over. As for getting it into a Galaxy on your own, that's hard! I can think of a way of getting it in on its back though. </p>

          You need the organ on a piano dolley, but check that the positioning doesn't damage the pedals. Thick blankets on the ground at the rear of the car and more inside the car, hanging over the rear sill and just touching the ground. Manouevre the organ around so it's at right angles to the car, keyboards facing to the rear. Position the bottom edge of the organ just over the edge of the blanket and gently tip it over onto its end, maybe three feet from the car. Remove dolley. Now gently tip the organ backwards until it's lying on the blankets covering the rear sill of the car. Now pick up and push the organ into the car. Its weight should take the blankets in with it.</p>

          I've done this hundreds of times but perhaps not with an organ as heavy as the Theatrum and only occasionally single handed. These shenanigans aren't the cause of my bad back but they probably didn't help!</p>

          I'd make sure I had help!</p>

            It is an early one 3218 #89190

            I picked it up - single handed. I moved it on a small wheeled dolly at the front, Lifting at the rear. Wheeled it up to the rear bumper, Till almost touching. Put wooden board under the rear to slide along the board and not the concrete. Lifted front up and over bumper onto blanket covering bumper with edge onto a flat board on the floor of the car. Rolled wheeled dolly away and under the car. Then lifted front up from inside the car, onto the edge of the board. Then went outside and lifted rear and slid along the board. Stopped before all the way along and removed blanket. Lifted rear onto board.</p>

            Heightwise it just fits with my chosen board and cannot topple because it sits in the door aperture opening perfectly. Now to move it 300 miles to Edinburgh. We will have three to remove. I will rope it to the rear anchorage points.
            </p>

            In essence I only lifted slightly and levered and slid and lifted the rear at the end. Very easy.</p>

            Thanks to all those who responded.Now to find a copy of the 3218 manual, repair manual and playing instructions...Anyone?

              Can anyone tell me what publication came with the organ?</p>

              Was there an instruction manual? I have only seen repair manuals advertised?</p>

              Was there a playing method guide?</p>

              I have seen one advertised for a much older instrument...

                I have now delivered and installed the Gulbransen, 718 miles round trip. We lifted the organ out onto a board and carried it to the rear of the house and through the patio doors. Moving it inside was easy on wooden floors with a four wheeled dolly. Hoovered out the spiders and it works a treat. </p>Found the headphone output so now we can record as well!

                We have acquired a repair manual but are looking for an instruction manual.
                </p>

                Does anyone have an owners instruction? Would anyone photocopy one for us? We'll gladly pay postage etc.?
